Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Delta State University Statesmen (4-6) dropped a Saturday doubleheader 11-3 and 2-0 to the Columbus State University Cougars (8-4) at Ragsdale Park. It marks the second straight weekend the Statesmen will drop a nonconference series on the road.
The Statesmen failed to capitalize on several opportunities in game one, fall 11-3 to No. 18 Columbus State at Ragsdale Park. The Cougars finished with 11 runs on 15 hits while holding the Statesmen to three runs on seven hits
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Statesmen took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on
Michael Vinson's two-RBI single to center. It was all Columbus State after that, as the Cougars scored eight unanswered runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Will McGinnis stop the CSU onslaught in the sixth with a solo home run to right, but the Cougars came right back for two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
Brandon Hardin (0-2) took the loss for the Statesmen after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing nine earned runs on nine hits.
Jeffrey Vance worked the final 4.2 innings and surrendered two runs on six hits.
Thomas Campbell (2-1) grabbed the win for the Cougars after pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed three runs on six hit with three walks and three strikeouts. Tyler Carpenter earned the save after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Kellen Bozeman led the Statesmen with two hits in game one, while Vinson finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Mitch Rider went 4 for 5 for the Cougars with a pair of RBIs, while Bruce Alter led CSU with three RBIs.
Game two proved to be a pitcher's duel, as the Cougars scratched out two runs in the fourth and held on for the win.
The Statesmen loaded the bases twice, but never could get the big hit to score any runs.
Jordan Moore (1-2) took the loss after throwing 5.2 innings. The sophomore from Calhoun City surrendered two runs on just three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Brent Hallmark also worked a third of an inning in relief.
Iain Sebastian (2-0) worked 5.0 innings of shutout baseball for the win.

Will McGinnis led the Statesmen with two hits each.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game at Ragsdale Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
