Statesmen close out regular season with 84-77 win over Arkansas-Monticello

CLEVELAND- The Delta State Statesmen (15-12, 9-5 GSC) closed out the regular season with an 84-77 victory over the Boll Weevils of Arkansas Monticello (14-12, 6-8 GSC) Saturday, Feb. 26 at Sillers Coliseum.

After a close first half, both teams came out determined and focused in the second period; but the Statesmen's will to win out lasted the Weevils.

It was evident both teams were a great competitive matchup as they went back and forth at the beginning of the first period. However, UAM pulled ahead and gained a 10-point lead at the 10:55 mark. Phil Turner, with a first half team-high 14 points, led the Statesmen on a run that closed the margin and the Statesmen went into halftime down 36-34.

Turner continued his offensive domination and scored 19 second half points. He ended the night with a career-high 33 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Arian Maliqi's efforts were a huge component of the win. He achieved a double-double by scoring 15 points and pulling in 11 rebounds. He also had two assists, two blocks and three steals.

The Statesmen ended the night shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (27-52), 34.6 percent from the arch (9-26) and 77.8 percent from the line (21-27).

The Statesmen head to the DeSoto Civic Center in Southhaven on Wednesday where the Gulf South Conference tournament will be played. The GSC will release the official tournament bracket late Saturday night.
