Cougars come back in 8th to complete sweep of Statesmen 2-1

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. - Cameron Robulak's RBI single in the third put the Delta State University Statesmen (4-7) up 1-0, but the Columbus State University Cougars (10-4) clawed out two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday to claim the series sweep with a 2-1 victory at Ragsdale Park.

Eric Weiss' two-run home run to left was the big blow and game-winning hit for the Cougars.  Up to that point, Statesmen starter Aaron Newcomb (2-2) was nearly untouchable scattering seven hits over 8.0 innings of work, but it was not enough as the junior took the loss.

Levi Futo (4-3) picked up the win thanks to the late rally.  He tossed 8.0 innings allowing one run on 10 hits with five strikeouts.  Blake Sills (2) slammed the door in the ninth for the save.

Robulak led the Statesmen at the plate with a 4 for 4 performance.  Will McGinnis added two hits while Michael Niemann, Kellen Bozeman, Brent Kakwitch and Patrick Taylor collected one hit each.

Weiss finished the game 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Eric Skinner was 2 for 3 as well.

The Statesmen will return to Ferriss Field for the first time in two weeks on Tuesday, as Delta State hosts North Alabama.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
