Box Score CLEVELAND—The Statesmen soccer team took the field for the second time in the regular season, as they hosted Williams Baptist College at Delta Field Wednesday. However, the Statesmen could not climb out of a deficit and fell to the Eagles 2-1.
The Statesmen came out of the gates quickly on offense. Sophomore defender
Jack Pilley almost headed the ball into the net off a cross from junior forward Matt Baker, but the ball went just wide.
The game remained at a scoreless standstill for much of the first half until the Eagles broke through with a goal. Martin Carmona put the ball in the back of the net for Williams Baptist in the 36th minute off on assist from Esteban Piccinini.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Eagles came right back in the second half and added to their lead. Carmona picked up his second goal of the game in the 62nd minute off an assist from Khalil de Lima.
Down by two the Statesmen looked to get back into the contest. Senior forward
Tom Santos was fouled during a Statesmen corner kick, and Delta State was awarded a penalty kick. Senior Midfielder
Joel Salazar took the kick and put the ball past goalkeeper Hector Vera to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Statesmen could not get an equalizing goal, and Williams Baptist came away with the victory.
The Statesmen led the stats in shots, as they took 25 compared to the Eagles' 11. Both teams combined for 29 fouls, and there were two bookings. Santos received a yellow card in the 55th minute, and Vera picked up his own yellow card in the 64th minute of the match.
The Statesmen now hit the road for the first time this season. They head to Mobile, Ala. to take on Spring Hill College this Friday. The match gets underway at 4 p.m.
