Turnovers costly in Statesmen loss to Lions

Leake puts up 21 points in Statesmen loss to Lions
Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama Lions used the three ball to jump out to a 13-4 lead en route to a 68-52 win over the Delta State University Statesmen at Flowers hall on Saturday.

Utilizing three straight shots from behind the arc  the Lions jumped out to a 13-4 lead early in the first-half against the Statesmen, but the green and white climbed back to within seven trailing UNA 28-21 at the end of the first-half.

Terry Leake led the Statesmen with nine first-half points going 1-of-2 from the three-point line. Rob Sikes went 4-of 5-from the field with eight points.

Mastin Warrick for the Lions led all scorers in the first-half with 11 points scoring 3-of-4 from being arc. Teammate Theron Jenkins pitched in nine points and seven rebounds in the first-half of play.

The Statesmen shot a combined 9-of-26 (34.6%) from the field, and used strong defense to hold the Lions to just shooting 11-of-36 (30.6%).

The green and white turned the ball over a total of 13 times in the first-half, compared to the purple and gold's four.

The Lion's shot 12-of-26 (46%) from behind the arc and that proved to be a difference maker in the contest, while the Statesmen went just 2-of-10 (20%).

Terry Leake led DSU with 21 points shooting 6-of-17 from the field and went 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, following up Leake's performace, Rob Sikes posted 10 points and Cornell Knight chipped in eight points with seven rebounds on the night.

Warrick Mastin put up 17 points shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Theron Jenkins posted an 11 point and 11 rebound performance on the night followed up by teammate Beaumont Beasely who chipped in nine points.

The Statesmen will travel to Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn. to continue in Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 28. against Christian Brothers University, tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
