Lady Statesmen use stingy defense in victory over West Florida

Aubree Ray finished with seven points, seven rebounds and seven blocks
Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. –The Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball team shot 52 percent in the second half to pull away with a 52-41 win over the West Florida Argonauts, Saturday at UWF Field House.
 
Scoring was at a premium in the first half, as neither team could find an offensive rhythm. The Argos (5-9, 1-1) were not able to achieve a double digit point total until there were less than two minutes remaining in the half.
 
The Lady Statesmen (7-4, 1-1) finished the cold shooting half 6-of-26 (23.1) percent, while DSU used stingy defense to hold UWF to 5-of-30 (16.7).
 
Rhandi Ball lead DSU with four first half points, while Aubree Ray helped the cause with three points, four rebounds and five blocks. Hanna Vette lead UWF with four first half points.
 
DSU came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, getting six straight points from senior All-American Veronica Walker. The run pushed the Lady Statesmen into a lead that was not relinquished.
 
After going 1-of-6 from the floor in the first half, Walker finished 8-of-14 from the field with 16 points and nine rebounds.
 
Brooke Rhodes was 11-of-12 from the free throw stripe en route to a game high 18 points.
 
Ray finished with a career day, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and seven blocks. The sophomore from Hernando, Miss., was only two blocks away from tying the single game record set by Walker last season.
 
Sher'Ryan Scott lead UWF with 14 points in the loss.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to Walter Sillers Coliseum for the first time in 2012 on Thursday Jan. 12 for a 6 p.m. contest with the University of West Georgia.
