Box Score CLEVELAND – The Delta State Statesmen basketball team fell to Arkansas-Monticello 51-48 Tuesday night.
In a tale of two halves, the Boll Weevils (3-1) outscored Delta State (1-2) 31-20 in the second half, including five three pointers and 54.5 percent shooting.
The Statesmen held a 28-20 lead at the half, but the Boll Weevils opened up the second half with an 11-1 run to take the lead 31-29.
The Statesmen led by as many as 10 points in the first half as Terry Leake had 16 of the Statesmen's 28 points. Leak also had seven rebounds in the first half, second to Cornell Knight's eight boards.
Leake finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds on the night, leading the Statesmen in both categories.
The Statesmen made all four free-throw attempts in the first half and did not send the Boll Weevils to the line, as both teams combined for only 13 fouls in the first 20 minutes.
Delta State also held Arkansas-Monticello to 31 percent shooting in the first half, while shooting 46 percent.
The Statesmen and Boll Weevils traded buckets after the UAM run to start the second half and lead changed nine times between the two teams in the following 13 minutes.
With 2:55 remaining, Arkansas-Monticello took the lead with its fifth 3-pointer of the second half. UAM added a jump shot to take a 3-point lead at 51-48 with 1:49 remaining.
After turnovers and missed free throws in the final minute by the Boll Weevils, the Statesmen were 0-3 on their final three shot attempts, including a three-pointer at the buzzer off the rim.
The Statesmen finished 37 percent shooting and were 8-11 from the free-throw line. The Statesmen missed all seven 3-point shots in the second half and finished 2- 13.
Arkansas-Monticello finished with 41 percent shooting and 7-23from the three-point range. The Boll Weevils made two of five free throw attempts.
The Statesmen will return to action next Tuesday against Concordia College of Alabama. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
