Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Delta State University men's basketball team dropped their third game in a row with a hard fought 53-43 loss to the University of Arkansas-Monticello inside Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday, December 15.
In a game where there were six ties and seven lead changes, the Statesmen (2-5) were not able to muster enough offense down the stretch to pull out the win against the Boll Weevils (5-4). The Green-and-White managed to shoot 15-of-51 (.294) from the field and 6-of-18 (.333) from beyond the arc in the contest.
Delta State captured their largest lead of the game on a tip in by senior forward Terry Leake, Jr. to put the Statesmen out in front 21-16 with 3:09 remaining in the first half of play. UAM rallied down the stretch in the closing minutes to take a 22-21 lead heading into the locker room.
DSU and UAM both came out to the court in the second half of play jostling back-and-forth for the lead, until Jamal Nixon drained a jumper at the 8:26 mark that spurred a 10-3 run by the Boll Weevils to separate themselves from the Statesmen enough to close out the game.
Jack Madgen connected on a critical three-point shot to close the gap to 47-42 with 1:26 remaining to give the Green-and-White one final shot to play the foul game but UAM connected on 6-of-8 of their final free throw attempts to seal the game.
Leake, Jr. recorded his third double-double of the season posting 17 points one 7-of-15 shooting from the floor and gathering in 14 rebounds, while
Cornel Knight and Madgen wrapped up the night with nine points and eight points respectively.
Kori Forge led UAM with 15 points with teammates Jamal Nixon and Josh Gibson contributed 12 points a piece.
