Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a 72-53 win over Selma University inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum on Wednesday, December 19. Terry Leake, Jr. recorded his 2nd consecutive double-double of 27 points and 15 rebounds, while
Ryan Smith dominated the paint with a season-high 12 points and six rebounds.
The Statesmen came out on a mission in the first-half of play, the mission was to shut down the Bulldog offense and they did just that holding Selma to just 5-of-19 (.263) shooting from the floor while forcing seven turnovers.
Smith ignited the Green-and-White offense, serving as a dominant inside presence put up eight first-half points. Smith finished the first half of play converting on 3-of-4 (.750) shooting from the floor.
The Statesmen made their move at the 10:46 mark, Leake, Jr. sparked a 19-7 run that extended all the way to the end of the half by converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. Leake, Jr. finished the half just shy of a double-double shooting 5-of-10 (.500) from the floor for 13 points while grabbing nine rebounds.
Leake, Jr. opened up the second half posting eight points in the first two minutes play, hitting two three-pointers and a pair of free-throws, that led the Statesmen on a 13-3 run.
Selma did not go away, Adrian Nelson spurred a 17-7 run for the Bulldogs hitting a three-pointer at the 17:48 mark in the contest. During that time the Green-and-White where stagnant from the field only converting one shot from the field in that time.
Jack Madgen ended the drought draining a mid-range jumper, which he put on a clinic with in the first-half, to lead the Statesmen on a 14-5 run that sealed the contest. Freshman
Declan Harrick recorded his first basket of the season in the closing seconds of the game.
Cornel Knight posted a stellar performance of 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks, Madgen wrapped up the night shooting 4-of-6 (.667) for nine points and five assists.
Delta State will return to action after the Christmas break hosting Belhaven University on December 29 inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum with tip scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
