CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 11 Christian Brothers University (21-5, 11-3 GSC) claimed a 78-68 victory over Delta State University (6-20, 1-13 GSC) in the final game of the regular season at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The loss guarantees the Statesmen the Mo. 8 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament and will face No. 4 nationally ranked and No. 1 seeded Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round on Friday, March 2. Game times will be announced on Sunday.
The Statesmen shot 47.4 percent for the night on 27-of-57 shooting, while the Buccaneers blistered the nets for 57.1 percent, hitting on 28-of-49 attempts and 6-of-15 3-pointers and 16-of-17 free throw attempts. DSU was 7-of-12 from 3-point range, but got to the free throw line just seven times, making all seven, in the loss.
DSU placed four players in double figures led by
Aaron Cooper's 21 points. Cornell Knight chipped in 12 while
Caleb Miskelly and Terry Leake added 11 apiece. Miskelly added a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
CBU was paced by All-American Scott Dennis' game-high 22 points. Zack Warner finished with 16 points and Cory McArthy dropped in 12 points.
Prior to the game, Delta State honored lone senior Robin Sikes, a 6-foot-8 forward from Biloxi, Miss., at a special ceremony before tipoff. Sikes is a two-year letter winner for the Statesmen after transferring from North Carolina-Wilmington.
