West Georgia second half assault downs Statesmen 82-70

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Delta State University men's basketball team dropped an 82-70 decision against University of West Georgia on Thursday at The Coliseum. A game with nine lead changes the Wolves used the three-point shot to break away from the Statesmen.

The Statesmen (5-16, 1-9 GSC) and the Wolves (19-5, 6-4 GSC) would trade three point buckets in the early minutes of the first-half of play before the green and white reeled off a 17-4 run that lasted until the 10:49 mark to go up 20-7.

West Georgia responded connecting on three straight three-point shots from Quincy Hill, Taylor Cochran, and Gavin Field to cut the Delta State lead to 22-18 with 8:53 left on the clock.

Field gave West Georgia their first lead of the night when he connected on a three-point shot at the 3:01 mark to put the Wolves up 32-31.

Delta State would pound the paint tallying 20 points to West Georgia‚s eight to maintain a 38-35 first-half lead.

Marqueys Brown led the Statesmen in the first-half posting 14 points and seven boards, Aaron Cooper shot 4-of-6 from the field for 11 points, while Terry Leake chipped in nine first-half points.

The Wolves were led by Field who tallied 10 points, Lavon Gray posted six points, and Cochran chipped in five first-half points.

Both teams started the second-half cold from the field but a steal and fast break bucket from Ryan Godfrey put the Wolves in a 42-42 tie with the Statesmen at 15:49 mark. The Statesmen and the Wolves continued to trade baskets until the Wolves put together a 10-2 run that was led by to Field three-point shots to put the West Georgia up 58-51 at the 9:27 mark.

The Statesmen out rebounded the Wolves 39 to 27 but the turnover bug bit the green and white again as they gave up the ball 18 times on the night. West Georgia used that to their advantage connecting on 10-of-17 from behind the arc.

Brown led the Statesmen posting a double-double on the night with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Cooper and Leake each ended the night tallying 15 points apiece.

Field went 6-of-7 from behind the arc for 22 points, Da‚ Ron Sims followed closely behind with a 20 point and seven rebound effort, and Godfrey chipped in 11 points.

The Statesmen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Livingston, Ala. as they take on the University of West Alabama Tigers. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
