Box Score NICEVILLE, Fla. – The Delta State University men's basketball team concluded the 2011-2012 season falling in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament 72-50 to No. 3 University of Alabama-Huntsville Friday, March 2 at The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.
The Statesmen (6-21) started by matching shots with the Chargers (24-3) and held a brief 4-3 lead 5:07 into the contest until Alabama-Huntsville opened the flood gates offensively with a 31-12 run that eventually ballooned into a 35-16 half-time lead.
The green-and-white managed to shoot just 7-of-24 (29.2%)from the field in the first-half with
Rob Sikes leading the way for the Statesmen posting five points.
Aaron Cooper pitched in three points and five rebounds.
Jaime Smith stepped up for the Chargers in the first-half racking up 16 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field. Ronnie Mack and Zane Campbell pitched in five points apiece for the Chargers in the first-half.
The Chargers continued their offensive dominance over the Statesmen in the second-half shooting 10-of-23 (43.5%) from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the arc. The Statesmen picked up the offensive tempo connecting on 14-of-29 (48.3%) from the field in the second-half.
Caleb Miskelly and Terry Leake led the way for the Statesmen posting eight points apiece on the night while
Arthur Jackson and Sikes chipped in seven points each.
Smith finished the night with an 18 point performance connecting 2-of-2 from behind the arc while Zane Campbell contributed 15 points and seven rebounds for the chargers.
UAH advanced to face the University of West Florida, who advanced with a thrilling six point win over the University of North Alabama.
The Statesmen saw their season close with a 6-21 overall mark in the loss.
