CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team used a furious second half comeback to defeat the University of West Georgia 64-57 Saturday, Jan. 19 at Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen (6-9, 2-5 GSC) held the Wolves (7-8, 4-3 GSC) scoreless for 9:10 seconds, 11:29 to 2:18, in the second half to engineer the comeback victory.
The Statesmen trailed 33-27 at the break, but shot 57.9 percent after the break and outscored the Wolves 37-24 in the second half. UWG shot just 37.5 percent in the second and 41.1 for the game. DSU ended the game at 48.8 percent and out-rebounded the Wolves 36-20.
DSU's defensive effort in the second half included 10 consecutive stops of the vaunted West Georgia offense, which came into the game averaging nearly 70 points a game.
Delta State placed three players in double figures led by Terry Leake, Jr.'s 18. The senior from Memphis, Tenn., also collected 14 rebounds and nailed 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the second frame.
Mike Weems scored 15 points on a career-high five made 3-pointers, while
Ryan Smith just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Quincy Hill led UWG with 17 points with Taylor Cochrane scored 10 points and zero in the second half.
The Statesmen return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24 at the University of West Florida. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and it will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network. J.T. Webb and Herb Brooks will have the call.
