CLEVELAND, Miss. – Freshman
Devin Schmidt tallied five points and one assist in overtime to lift the Delta State University men's basketball team 79-73 over Eckerd College inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 9. Schmidt knocked in a career-high 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor and connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe while grabbing eight rebounds.
Four other Statesmen recorded double-digit scoring efforts on the day:
Willie Readus notched 17 points for the second straight game and brought in eight rebounds;
Jack Madgen contributed 15 points and three assists;
Michael Weems and
Alister Chisholm both bucketed 10 points in the contest. Chisholm also brought down nine rebounds.
The night opened with an offensive struggle between the Statesmen (1-1) and the Tritons (1-1) as both teams combined for a total of 27 points through the first ten minutes of the first half.
Eckerd through that stretch managed to take a 19-11 lead over Delta State with 9:58 remaining on an E.J. Moody three-point shot.
DSU found its groove offensively late in the half starting with a pair of Readus free throws. The pair from the charity stripe sparked a 14-5 run by the Green-and-White that would extend all of the way into the opening moments of the second half where Readus knocked down another pair of free throws to tie the game at 28-28 with 19:21 left on the clock.
The Tritons took advantage moments later putting together a 13-0 run that would give EC its largest lead of the night 41-28 with 15:02 remaining.
After being held without a field goal for a span of 8:29, Schmidt knocked down a three-point shot that sparked a 20-7 run for the Statesmen. That run brought the score back to a tie game at 48-48 at the 9:58 mark; Mike Weems knocked down two key three-point shots to keep the run alive.
Madgen broke a 58-58 tie with 2:37 remaining on a brilliant drive into the lane that finished with an up-and-under layup to give the Statesmen back the lead 60-58.
Eckerd reclaimed the lead 63-62 on a Kendall Roberts three pointer after relinquishing for the first time at the 7:52 mark earlier in the second half.
With 12.5 seconds remaining Readus went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tie the game 65-65. Jerrick Stevenson missed on an 18-foot jumper for the Tritons to send the contest into overtime.
Delta State returns to action on Nov. 16, when the team travels to face LeMoyne – Owen College in Memphis, Tenn. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
