CLEVELAND, Miss- The Delta State men's basketball won their third game in a row defeating Selma University 90-71 to improve their record to 3-1 on the year.
Willie Readus lead the way for the Statesmen scoring 17 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. Freshman
Devin Schmidt tied his career high with 18 points to lead all scorers in the game.
Selma started out strong on the defensive end and held the Statesmen scoreless for almost the first three minutes. Then
Willie Readus made a free throw and
Jack Madgen hit a three to get things going for the Statesmen.
Delta State then picked up the pace on offense and
Michael Weems scored an open three to give the Statesmen their first lead of the game. Selma continued to quick ball movement and hit a couple of three to keep it close with eleven minutes to go in the half.
Delta State pulled out to a six point lead but could not keep it as three pointers from Jaime Washington and Jerrod Brown pulled the Bulldogs back to within two with eight minutes to go in the half.
Delta State then went on a 9-2 run to break open the scoring to take a 12 point lead with six minutes to go in the half.
Selma refused to go away and kept plugging away at it. The Bulldogs closed out the half on and 13-10 run to make the halftime score 40 to 32 with Delta State on top. The Statesmen did a lot of work from the free throw line in the first half shooting 26 times from the free throw line and making 18 of them.
Devin Schmidt was the leading scorer in the first half soring 12 points. With Madgen and Washington scoring seven apiece.
In the second half, Delta State came out on fire going on a 13-2 run in the first three minutes to open up an eleven point lead with
Cornel Knight scoring four points.
Then Selma went on five point run to close the gap to 53-37 with several layups by Jaime Washington.
Delta State then answered Selma with a 13-6 run of their own capping it off was another three point shot by
Michael Weems. After that Delta State did not look back.
Delta State continued to work the paint with Readus leading the way with two key offensive rebounds and key second chance opportunities to help increase the lead for the Statesmen.
Delta State continued to shoot well down the stretch with the bench providing a lot of help on the inside and outside. The Statesmen bench scored 27 points on the night with
Declan Harrick scoring his first points of the season.
Delta State shot 51 percent from the field on the night and made 31 of 45 free throws in the game.
