CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team picked up its sixth consecutive victory of the season with a 64-49 win over Cumberland University Saturday, Nov. 30 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen improved to 6-1 on the year, while handing the Bulldogs (7-1) their first loss of the season.
Delta State placed four players in double figures with
Willie Readus picking up his third double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Morton, Miss., native was just 2-of-6 from the field, but connected on 10-of-14 from the free throw line.
Cornel Knight (12), who also had 10 rebounds,
Mike Washington (11) and
Jack Madgen (10) joined Readus in double figures.
The Statesmen finished the game 23-of-52 (44.2 percent), including 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) at the free throw line. Defensively, the Statesmen had one of their better performances of the season after holding the Bulldogs to 15-of-55 from the field for a season-low 27.3 percent.
DSU, led on the backboards 43-33, dominated the paint, outscoring CU 38-14.
Cumberland's Moritz Dern and Marquel Hickerson scored 10 points each.
Physicality was the name of he game in the first half, as the Statesmen methodically marched to a 31-28 halftime lead. DSU had opportunities to make the margin wider at the half, but managed just 9-of-18 at the free throw line in the first half.
In a half that saw seven lead changes and score tied six times, the Statesmen shot 10-of-25 from the field for 40 percent, while holding the Bulldogs to just 8-of-28 from the field for 28.6 percent.
The Bulldog bench was a major factor in the half, as Cumberland outscored Delta State 16-3, but the Statesmen did outscore CU in the paint 14-8.
DSU's
Willie Readus led all scorers with 10 points at the break, while
Jack Madgen added eight points and
Mike Washington dropped in seven.
Dern, who nailed 2-of-2 from 3-point range, led Cumberland with eight points.
The Statesmen return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 7, as Delta State welcomes Miles College to Walter Sillers Coliseum for a nonconference clash. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
