Late Surge from Statesmen Falls Short in 54-47 Defeat to West Georgia

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Delta State University men's basketball team fell to the University of West Georgia 54-47 inside The Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 23. Terry Leake, Jr. led the way for the Statesmen with 17 points and five rebounds.

Delta State (9-15, 5-11 GSC) and West Georgia (8-16, 5-11 GSC) went back and forth battling in the first-half with neither team seeing a significant lead.

Leake, Jr. gave the Statesmen their largest lead of the half on a layup with 6:05 remaining but the Wolves closed out the remainder of the on a 9-1 run to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room

Leake, Jr. tallied eight points and two rebounds while Jack Madgen followed up with five points. Cornel Knight tallied three points and five rebounds.

Quincy Hill led the West Georgia offensive surge with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Delta State looked to close down the West Georgia lead late in the game, with Leake, Jr. leading the way on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 47-44 with 3:35 remaining.

The Wolves responded quickly with a Hill layup to extend the lead back out to two possessions to close out the game.

Knight tallied six points and 11 rebounds to close out the contest and Jack Madgen tallied nine points and six assists.

Hill finished the night leading all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and six rebounds.

The Statesmen return to action on Thursday, Feb. 28, facing off against the University of West Florida inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
