Statesmen slip in 73-54 defeat to No. 22 Lions

Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State University men's basketball team dropped a 73-54 decision to No. 22 University of North Alabama inside Flowers Hall on Saturday, Feb. 09. The 73 points were the most allowed by the Statesmen in a Gulf South Conference game this season.

Jack Madgen opened the contest hitting a three-pointer which helped the Statesmen run out to a 5-0 lead over the Lions.

Delta State held the lead until Bruce Adams connected on a shot from behind the arc for North Alabama to take a 7-6 lead but Green-and-White responded in kind with a Michael Weems three-pointer to reclaim the lead 9-7 with 15:18 remaining.

DSU stretched the lead out to four on a Terry Leake, Jr. dunk, but UNA streaked on a 14-4 run, capped off by Rashaun Claiborne who completed an “old fashioned” three-point play to give the Lions a 23-17 lead with 1:40 remaining.

Cornel Knight nailed four straight free-throws along with a Madgen jumper to close down the North Alabama lead to 26-22 at the half.

The Lions opened the second half on a 6-2 run extending their lead to 32-24 with 16:19 remaining and never allowed the Statesmen to recover.

Leake, Jr. finished the night 21 points and six rebounds while Madgen contributed 13 points.  Weems chipped in 10 points.

UNA found their way to free-throw line early and often in the contest shooting 21-of-27 from the line compared to DSU's 11-of-19.
Claiborne closed out the night with 21 points and eight rebounds and Adams chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Statesmen return to action on Thursday, Feb. 14, welcoming Shorter University to Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. and can be listened to via the Statesmen Sports Network.
