Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The Delta State University Statesmen baseball team opened up the weekend series against the Union Bulldogs with a 10-3 win at Fesmire Field.
Delta State (28-5-1, 13-2-1 Gulf South Conference) got out to a quick start early in the game, scoring seven runs in the second inning. The Statesmen finished with 15 hits and eight Statesmen starters scored a run.
Carlos Leal led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a single to left center by
Brent Langston, putting runners on the corners.
Kasey Hinton put the Statesmen on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Leal from third.
After Langston reached second base on a wild pitch, the first baseman came around to score on a hard hit ball by
Jonathan Andrews that bounced over the shortstop up the middle and was scored an error.
Jordan Chovanec then hit his first home run of 2013 over the right field wall to put Delta State up 4-0 with his 19th and 20th RBIs of the season.
Sam Kidd followed it up with a single up the middle and the stole second base. On the next pitch, Kidd stole third and scored when the throw went over third base into left field.
Tyler Aldridge then walked and stole second base. After advancing to third on a ground out to the right side by
Michael Vinson, Aldridge came around to score with a double by
Ben Kingsley.
With the Statesmen batting around, Leal stepped up for his second at bat of the inning and singled to right center, scoring Kingsley for the seventh run of the inning.
After a quick first inning that featured two strikeouts and a ground out, Statesmen starter
Josh Branstetter walked in a Union (7-26, 2-16 GSC) run with the bases loaded in the second inning.
In the third, Delta State added a run when
Sam Kidd hit a double of the top of the wall in right field scoring Andrew from third, after reaching with a single earlier in the inning.
Union scored two runs in the fourth inning, but was unable to reel in Delta State.
After a lead off single in the sixth inning, Aldridge stole second base with one out for his second stolen base of the game. Aldridge then took third base on a wild pitch and scored on
Carlos Leal's liner back up the middle.
Branstetter improved to 6-1 on the season with 7.2 innings pitched. Branstetter moved into fourth on the all-time Statesmen listed, now sitting at 307 innings pitched in his career for the Green-and-White. The senior also moved into a tie for tenth on the all time win list at Delta State.
