Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. - The Delta State University women's soccer team lost to Belhaven University, 3-2, in a competitive game, Saturday afternoon at Delta Field.
Both teams had many chances to score early and often, with a total of 25 shots between the two teams. Delta State controlled the tempo for most of the game but just could not find the back of the net.
The Lady Blazers' Jordan Organ opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a blast from outside the 18-yard box. DSU Keeper Kelsey Elling made a dive for the ball but could not get close.
On the ensuing kickoff, within 30 seconds, the Lady Statesmen's Lauren May dribbled down the right side of the field and scored the equalizing goal, making the score 1-1.
After that, Delta State controlled the pace; took shot after shot but kept hitting wide. The score at the half remained 1-1.
In the second half, the Lady Statesmen controlled the pace again but could not score. Then, in the 59th minute, Belhaven's Hana Jeong scored for the Lady Blazers off a deflection by Elling.
Six minutes later, May scored her second goal of the game for Delta State, after being set up by teammates Tabitha Hayden and Tais Cotta. That shot tied the game at 2-2.
DSU's Megan Laplante had an opportunity to score the go-ahead goal on a blast from 34-yards out, but the goal keeper for the Lady Blazers made what was probably the save of the game, barely tipping the ball over the crossbar.
The score remained tied until the 85th minute when Belhaven's Kaylie Kingsbury chipped the ball over the head of Elling. The Lady Blazers took the win over the Lady Statesmen, 3-2.
Delta State falls to 0-2 on the year. Elling picked up her first loss of the season. The Lady Statesmen return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m., as they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Ouachita Baptist University.
