CLEVELAND, Mississippi- The Delta State Statesmen soccer team faced the Union Bulldogs in a crucial Gulf South Conference match-up at Delta Field Tuesday afternoon.
Delta State came out pressing from the first whistle. In the 16th minute of play
Brock Hollier beat a defender one-on-one in the box and slotted the ball into the lower corner of the far post to put the Statesmen up 1-0. Less than ten minutes later in the 25th minute,
Amine Rahmani hit a one time half-volley off a
Leo Rodrigues corner kick. Rahmani netted the strike just out of the reach of the Bulldogs keeper, Matt Kesler. The Statesmen went into the half up by two goals.
Six minutes into the second half
Russell Alvarez was fouled in the penalty area for DSU and awarded the team another key opportunity. Rahmani stepped up and put the final goal in the net for the Green-and-White.
Delta State had a tremendous offensive effort leading in shots 14-6. The Statesmen held the advantage in shots on goal, 6-3. DSU opened the game by converting their first three shots on goal.
Jonathan Hilton preserved the shutout making two saves and his opponent, Kesler, made three.
DSU continues their home stand as West Florida comes to town Friday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. at Delta Field.
