Statesmen Soccer Punches Ticket to the Postseason

DSU Defeats West Florida 2-1 in OT

CLEVELAND, Mississippi- The Delta State men's soccer team has clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament for the second time in program history with an overtime victory over the University of West Florida Argos, 2-1. The last time the Statesmen made the tournament was in the 2012 season.

The Statesmen fell behind late in the 42nd minute when Soren Yuhaschek netted a goal from the top of the penalty box to put the Argos up 1-0. DSU went into the half down by one goal.

In the 75th minute Sebastian Knabke headed a ball from teammate Luke Mason into the back of the net. Knabke's header went just under the crossbar and out of the reach of a diving Andre Moreira. The score would remain tied 1-1 as regulation expired.

Delta State came out streaking early in the first overtime period. In the 95th minute of play Austin Jackman netted the golden-goal that gave DSU the come-from-behind win and a berth into postseason play. Jaxon Lambert played the ball into Jackman who was waiting at the six-yard-box where he headed the ball into the back of the net.

Both teams had a total of ten shots but DSU held the advantage in shots on goal, 8-5. The Argos led in corner kick 5-3. Jonathan Hilton made four saves for the Statesmen and his counterpart, Moreira, had six.

Delta State will face GSC newcomer Spring Hill College this Sunday, Oct. 26th at 3 p.m. to close out conference play for the season. The GSC Tournament will begin on Nov. 7 in Pensacola, Florida. Follow GoStatesmen.com for more information on tournament seeding when it becomes available.
