Jack Madgen scored 21 points and six Delta State University players scored in double figures, as the 13th-ranked Statesmen (2-1) defeated Selma University (1-5), 108-75, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. DSU's 108 points are the most since a, 111-65, victory over Concordia College on Jan. 7, 2009.
"Proud of the offensive execution our guys had tonight against a solid Selma club," head coach
Jim Boone said. "Jack knocked down some big shots, especially from the perimeter in our second half run. Anytime you have six players score in double digits, you're playing unselfish basketball."
After leading the Bulldogs by 11 at the break, the Statesmen outscored Selma 65-43 in the second half to pull away for the win.
DSU was 17-of-26 in the second half for 65.4 percent, but put the game away at the free throw line, making 29-of-34, including 11-of-12 from
LaQuavius Cotton down the decisive stretch.
Madgen, a junior from Williamstown, South Australia, hit on 6-of-7 shots from the floor and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc for a game-high 21 points. He also connected on 5-of-8 free throws and pulled down four rebounds, with two assists.
Devin Schmidt added 20 points while handing out four assists and clearing four rebounds.
Zelvin Smith dropped in a career-high 18 points, besting his previous high of 16 versus Valdosta State. The junior was 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line.
Cotton and
Alister Chisholm finished with 16 points each, while P.J. Davis tied his career-high with 15 points and six rebounds. Cam Denny rounded out the scoring for the Statesmen with a late basket.
DSU finished the night shooting 66.7 percent on 34-of-51 from the floor. The Statesmen were also 5-of-11 from 3-point range and 35-of-44 from the line.
SU was 26-of-65 from the field for 40 percent, but made just 5-of-22 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs did connect on 18-of-20 at the line.
The Statesmen outscored SU 56-30 in the paint and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 36-26.
Selma placed four players in double digits, led by Jonathon Bentley's 14 points.
DSU led 43-32 at the break. The Statesmen shot a blistering 68 percent in the first half, connecting on 17-of-25 from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. DSU outscored SU in the paint 28-10, including 10-0 on fast breaks.
The Statesmen return to action on Monday, Nov. 24, as Delta State welcomes LeMoyne-Owen College to Sillers Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Lady Statesmen face Stillman College at 5:30 p.m.
