GSC Champions: Delta State claimed a share of its seventh Gulf South Conference Championship in program history, and first under head coach Todd Cooley, after defeating Mississippi College 27-3 to finish 6-1 in league play on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Sullivan leads one of the nation's top offensive units, throwing for 3,098 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. The Louisville, Mississippi, native has completed 247-of-382 passes, while averaging 309.8 yards passing per game to lead DSU and the GSC. Two In A Row: Todd Cooley captured his second straight Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year honor after leading the Statesmen to a 9-1 finish and a share of the league title. Cooley shared the honor this season with Florida Tech's Steve Engleheart. Cooley is the first DSU coach since Ron Roberts in 2007 and 2008 to win back-to-back Coach of the Year honors.

Junior Casey Osborne has developed into one of the nation's elite receivers, pacing the GSC in receptions per game (7.4). The Flowery Branch, Georgia native has caught 74 passes for 964 yards and eight touchdowns, while averaging 96.4 yards per game. Since Todd Cooley took over as head coach, the Statesmen are 5-1 against ranked opponents, with the with the lone loss coming at No. 12 West Alabama in 2013.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3 - Despite ranking dead last in time of possession in the Gulf South Conference and 159th out of 167 teams in NCAA DII, Delta State boasts the nation's third-ranked scoring offense at 46.4 points per game. The Statesmen have topped the 40-point plateau in six of their games this season, including the 70-point barrier twice.

SANTA LOVES THE STATESMEN
The Statesmen love the month of December, posting an 9-3 record. DSU is 6-3  in the NCAA playoffs during Santa's favorite month.

DELTA STATE IN PLAYOFFS UNDER FIFTH HEAD COACH
Todd Cooley, who has guided the Statesmen to a 9-1 regular season record and the school's seventh GSC championship, is the fifth different head coach to take a Delta State team to the playoffs. That makes the Statesmen one of just two Division II programs to have reached the playoffs under five different coaches. North Dakota State, now a member of Division I (FCS), which holds the DII record with five national titles, is the other.

DSU TRYING TO JOIN ELITE GROUP
The Statesmen are attempting to become the fourth Gulf South Conference school to win multiple national championships in football. North Alabama and Valdosta State have both won three titles each, and former GSC member Troy won two before making the move to Division I.

North Dakota State (5)    1983,1985,1986,1988, 1990

PROTECTING OUR HOUSE
Delta State will be playing its 227th home game on Saturday, Nov. 29 versus West Georgia in the Second Round of the NCAA Football Championship at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. The Statesmen are 142-75-8 since opening the season in 1970. DSU, which played several seasons at Delta Field located where Wyatt Hall now stands, is 254-125-15 all-time at home.

STATESMEN CLAIM SHARE OF SEVENTH LEAGUE CROWN
Delta State completed its turn-around under head coach Todd Cooley, capturing a share of its seventh Gulf South Conference Championship with a 6-1 league record after defeating Mississippi College 27-3 on Nov. 15 in the Heitage Bell Classic.

After inheriting a 3-7 team in January of 2013, coach Cooley, who captured a piece of his fifth championship overall and first as skipper, has led Delta State to a 16-4 record and a 10-3 mark in GSC play.

The Statesmen claimed league titles in 1998, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014. DSU's seven league titles are second only to North Alabama's 11.

GSC HAS THE MOST DIVISION II FOOTBALL TITLES
The Gulf South Conference has won the most NCAA Division II Football National Championships of any league with 10. The GSC has had five different schools win those titles. Troy State took it home in 1984 and 1987, followed by Jacksonville State in 1992.  North Alabama won three straight in 1993, 1994 and 1995 and Delta State claimed it in 2000. Valdosta State then followed with titles in 2004, 2007 and 2012.

Another former GSC member, Mississippi College, won the 1989 championship but was later stripped of it by the NCAA. Ironically the Choctaws defeated another GSC member, Jacksonville State, in that title game.

GSC TEAMS IN THE NCAA PLAYOFFS
The Gulf South Conference has enjoyed greater success in NCAA Championships than any other conference in NCAA Division II.  The GSC holds an impressive 104-61 record all-time in the NCAA DII football playoffs with 10 championships won.  The GSC holds the playoff record for most schools having won a championship (5).  The GSC records are outlined below.

Championships    10
Most different schools winning title    5
Most different schools making playoffs    12
Most playoff appearances by members    72
Most NCAA playoff victories    104
Most NCAA playoff games played    162

GSC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS
The Gulf South Conference has, traditionally, been one of the more dominant conferences in NCAA Division II football.  In fact, no other conference boasts more championships (10) or playoff wins (102) than the GSC.  Since 1984, the GSC has won 10 NCAA DII national titles.

RED HOT-RED ZONE
The Statesmen have scored on 50-of-61 trips into the red zone this season, for a 82 percent conversion rate. In fact, 40 of their 61 trips have resulted in a touchdown. For their efforts, the DSU offense leads the GSC and ranks third nationally with 46.4 points per game.

SCORING FAST & OFTEN
Delta State's offense is scoring in bunches this season, averaging 44.6 points per game to rank third in NCAA DII. The Statesmen have topped the 40-point plateau in six of their games this season. DSU ranks 11th nationally in total offense at 500.2 yards per game, led by the league's top passing attack (337.1 ypg), which also ranks eighth in the NCAA. DSU has topped 50-plus points in four games this season, with a high of 73 against Concordia on Nov. 8.

WILLIAMS' WAY
Offensive coordinator Joel Williams has Statesmen opponents feeling some type of way. The veteran ball coach holds the distinction of orchestrating three of Delta State's most prolific single season offenses. His 2003 and 2004 units, under then head coach Rick Rhoades, accounted for 458 and 443 points respectively.

The 2014 Statesmen are no different, scoring 464 points through the regular season, ranking No. 3 nationally in posints per game (46.4)and first in the GSC. DSU also leads the league and ranks 11th in total offense at 500.2 yards per game.

DSU has topped the 30-point plateau eight times, including two games with over 70 points in a game.

SULLIVAN SEIZING OPPORTUNITY
Sophomore Tyler Sullivan, last season's GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year, has seized the opportunity to be Delta State's starting quarterback this year, throwing for 3,098 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The Louisville, Mississippi, native became the seventh quarterback to top 4,000 career yards passing after throwing for 158 in DSU's 45-24 win at West Alabama. Sullivan, who has 4,862 yards to rank fifth on the career list, has completed 247-of-382 passes with 12 interceptions, while averaging 309.8 yards passing per game to lead DSU and the GSC.

Sullivan has shined in the big stage matchups for the Statesmen, passing for 502 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-32 win at Valdosta State, and 456 yards and five touchdowns in a 58-20 throttling of Florida Tech, both of which were GSC-TV Games of the Week.

Throughout his career, Sullivan, who is 13-2 as a starter at DSU, has performed well under pressure. In his first career start against No. 14 Tarleton State last season, Sullivan completed 33-of-49 passes for 422 yards and four touchdowns, two weeks later he established a new school record for single game passing yards with 520 and five touchdowns in a 63-55 win over No. 21 Valdosta State.

In 17 games, Sullivan has already eclipsed the 4,000 yard passing mark. The former Winston Academy standout has completed 378-of-583 passes for 4,862 yards, moving him into fifth place all-time at DSU, with 39 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He is averaging 286.0 yards per game for his career.

Sullivan's total offense numbers have also been outstanding, amassing 5,201 yards (305.9 ypg), climbing to sixth on the career chart.

TEMPO TEAM
The Statesmen are certainly an up-tempo offensive unit, ranking dead last in the GSC in time of possession despite leading the league in scoring at 46.4 points per game. In DSU's 10 games this season, the Green-and-White are averaging 26:26 minutes of possession.

BIRDMAN STALKING THE RECORD BOOK
Junior Casey Osborne is putting together a remarkable junior campaign, leading the Statesmen with 74 receptions for 964 yards and eight touchdowns. The Flowery Branch, Georgia native has caught 12 passes twice this season, including a three touchdown performance at Fort Valley State.  His 74 receptions rank fifth in a season and are just 14 away from the single season school record.

The speedster has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in six games this season, including 12 receptions for 113 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-13 win at Fort Valley State. Osborne followed that up with a career-high 192 yards and a score in DSU's 49-32 win at then No. 12 Valdosta State. In just the first half of action, Osborne caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown versus CSU. In DSU's 33-28 win versus No. 3 North Alabama, Osborne caught nine passes for 101 yards.

Osborne has caught 142 passes for 1,847 yards and 16 touchdowns in his 27-game career. He ranks fifth on the list with 142 catches and needs 36 yards to become the ninth receiver to top 1,000 in a season.

NATION'S LEADER IN TACKLES-FOR-LOSS
Delta State's defensive unit enters the postseason ranked No. 1 nationally in tackles-for-loss with 11.0 per game. The Statesmen also rank seventh in the NCAA in sacks per game (3.3).

DIRTY DELTA DEFENSE
The Statesmen defense has made marked improvements this season under second-year coordinator Charles Anthony. DSU ranks 19th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 17.8 points per game. The Statesmen also rank eighth nationally in Red Zone defense, surrendering just 19 scores on 32 trips for a 59.4 conversion percentage.

TULLO TURNING UP
Sophomore linebacker Landry Tullo continues to increase his production each week for the Statesman defense. The Hoover, Alabama, native had six tackles (five solo), one tackle for loss, a pass break up and one quarterback hurry in the season finale against Mississippi College.  Tullo is DSU's third leading tackler with 48 tackles (32 solo) and leads DSU with seven sacks and is second with 13 tackles for loss.  He is tied for fifth in sacks and eighth in tackles for loss in the Gulf South Conference.

Earlier in the season, the former Hoover High standout recorded a game-high 10 tackles with three tackles for loss, one sack and caused a fumble in a 35-10 win over Shorter.  Tullo knifed through for a key stop on 4th-and-1 play with 5:03 remaining to help preserve a 33-28 win over North Alabama. In his 20-game career, Tullo has totaled 75 tackles, 16.5 tackles-for-loss and recorded seven sacks.

MR. GREEDY
After seeing action in 10 games mainly on special teams and as a reserve linebacker a year ago, sophomore and All-GSC pick Wilson Curtis has become a key cog for the Statesmen defensee.  The Winnsboro, Louisiana, leads DSU and ranks second in the GSC with 14.5 tackles for loss and is third with 4.5 sacks (9th/GSC) while starting all 10 contests. Curtis is fifth on the team with 40 tackles (26 solo) along with one interception and two fumbles recovered.  He has three games with double figure tackles, recording 12 at Valdosta State, 18 against Shorter and 11 at West Alabama.

TURNOVER MARGIN
Delta State enters the NCAA playoffs +6 in turnover margin. The Statesmen have turned the ball over 23 times this season, but have recorded 14 interceptions and 15 fumble recoveries to equal 29 turnovers forced.

THIRD QUARTER MADNESS
Delta State has outscored the opposition 132-27 in the third quarter this year, and 220-77 overall in the second half. Of the 27 points surrendered in the third quarter, only 13 have come on an offensive play.

COOLEY CAPTURES SECOND COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD
After guiding the Statesmen to a 9-1 record and a share of the GSC title - his first as a head coach, Todd Cooley was named Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year for a second straight year. Cooley joins Ron Roberts (2007, 2008) as DSU's only two-time recipient.

AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The Statesmen are 2-0 this season against ranked opponents after defeating No. 13 Valdosta State, 49-32, at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Sept. 20, and edging No. 3 North Alabama 33-28 at Parker Field-McCool Stadium on Nov. 1. Since Todd Cooley took over as head coach, the Statesmen are 5-1 against ranked opponents, with the with the lone loss coming at No. 12 West Alabama in 2013.

LAST CLEAN SHEET
The Statesmen blanked the Hornets of Concordia College of Selma, Alabama, 77-0 on Nov. 9, 2013 at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. Prior to last year's game, DSU had not shutout an opponent since defeating Arkansas-Monticello, 53-0, on Nov. 11, 2006.

LAST TIME STATESMEN WERE SHUTOUT
It's been 12 seasons since Delta State suffered its last shutout. Then No. 1 Valdosta State defeated the Statesmen 42-0 back on Sept. 1, 2002 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Ga.

COOLEY VERSUS NONCONFERENCE OPPONENTS
The Statesmen took on its seventh nonconference opponent under Todd Cooley on Saturday, Nov. 8, as Concordia traveled to Delta State. The Statesmen are an unblemished 4-0 against out of conference opponents at Parker Field-McCool Stadium under Cooley.

KICKIN UP THE STATS
Sophomore Vince Sciorotta scored nine points, connecting on two field goals and three extra points against Mississippi College last week. He is  third all-time with 107 career PATs - four away from moving past Trey Crum (110) for second.  The Cumming, Georgia, native has scored 170 career points, ranking third in points scored kicking and seventh on the all-time scoring list.

Sciorotta's 57 PAT's this season rank second on the DSU single season list, needing four PATs to pass Trey Crum (56/2004) for second and 15 surpass Billy Dorgan (71/2000).  Sciorrotta's 90 points this season, are tied for sixth (Trevar Reed (2008,2009) / Rico McDonald (2000)) on the DSU single season scoring list and rank first in the GSC and 27th in the NCAA. Sciorrotta has split the uprights on his last nine field goal attempts dating to his last miss on a 42-yard attempt in the fourth quarter at Florida Tech.
