OXFORD, Mississippi – Continuing with a grueling exhibition schedule, Delta State University faced off with the Rebels of the University of Mississippi on Friday night. The Statesmen fell to the Rebels by a final of 97-58.
The Statesmen came out of the gate much quicker than their last contest. Sophomore guard
Devin Schmidt started the offensive charge with a floater in the paint in the opening two minutes.
Jack Madgen tied the game at 5-5 with an old fashion three-point play. Soon after,
Zelvin Smith Jr. found Schmidt behind the arc to give Delta State its first and only lead of the night, 11-9, at the 14:14 mark.
Possession of the lead changed hands a couple times before Ole Miss went on a 16-4 run to take a 41-18 advantage at the 3:20 mark.
Fouls and turnovers plagued the Statesmen late in the first half, but three consecutive buckets and a pair of free throws in four trips down the court from
Alister Chisholm, Schmidt, and Smith sent Delta State into the locker room trailing 50-26.
The Statesmen shot 47.6 percent from the field, going 10-of-21 while the Rebels held the slight advantage going 20-of-40 from the field for 50.0 percent in the first half.
Second half play featured a lot of Ole Miss offense. Delta State reached within 26, but the deficit was too much for the Green-and-White to overcome. Madgen and freshman
PJ Davis came out on fire for second-half play with the Aussie scoring 12 and Davis chipping in 10.
On the night, DSU shot 19-of-42 from the floor for a 45.2 field goal percentage compared to a 52.7 field goal percentage from the Rebels.
