TIPOFF
The Statesmen basketball team improved to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play with road wins over then No. 20 Christian Brothers and Union University.

With the pair of wins, Delta State is now on a three-game win streak, the longest of the season, as they welcome GSC opponents Valdosta State on Thursday and West Florida on Saturday this week.

DSU will face off with the Blazers of Valdosta State on Thursday, Dec. 18 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Since the first meeting between the two squads, the Blazers have posted a 3-10 record on DSU's home court. The overall series is even at 18-18.

The Argos of West Florida spoiled Senior Day for the Statesmen last season at Walter Sillers. DSU found redemption a week later in the first round of the GSC Tournament, defeating UWF, 67-53.

Sophomore Devin Schmidt continues to lead Delta State in scoring with 18.1 points per game. The 6-foot-4 guard is known for his aggressive offensive attack in the lane and beyond the perimeter, but he is also successful playing small ball.

Schmidt leads the team this season at the line, going 57-for-63 for a 90.5 percentage. He holds the top spot in the conference and ranks 23rd in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage.

The Sevierville, Tenn., native also ranks first in the league and 17th in DII in free throws made with 57.

Jack Madgen, a 6-foot-5 guard, continues to climb in the DSU record books for his play behind the arc. Madgen now holds the No. 6 spot in 3-pointers attempted (283) and the No. 5 rank in 3-pointers made (118).

Madgen and Schmidt are on the cusp of career milestones. Madgen has tallied 745 career points in three years, while Schmidt has 680 in less than a year and a half.

Toronto, Canada native Alister Chisholm put up big performances against Christian Brothers and Union, leading the Statesmen to a 68-58 victory over UU with 19 points. That marks the fourth game this season in which the guard has been the leading scorer for DSU.

Delta State has maintained its tough defensive reputation. The Statesmen rank 18th in Division II in total blocks with 43. Freshman PJ Davis ranks 14th individually in total blocks and has almost half of DSU's total blocks at 21. By himself, Davis has the same number of blocks or more than 109 Division II teams.

As a team, the Green-and-White hold the No. 6 and 7 mark in DII in free throws made and free throw percentage, respectively.

DSU has made 199 free throws and is shooting 79.0 percent from the line to also lead the league in those categories.

The Statesmen will return to action after the holidays against Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama.
