Todd Cooley announced the addition of seven mid-year transfers to the program on Thursday, Dec. 18. The talented group of student-athletes will join a nucleus of 60 lettermen returning for the Statesmen next season.
"We're excited about the addition of these young men to our football family," Cooley said. "Each one of them addresses a need and each one will be ready to come in and compete this January for playing time. As we all know, recruiting never stops and we will continue to look for future Statesmen to join our program."
DE | Erin Brown (6-3 | 270) - West Monroe, Louisiana/Hinds CCBrown played in nine games as a sophomore at Hinds, totaling 41 tackles and 4.5 tackles-for-loss. The 6-foot-3 defensive end also recorded a sack and two pass breakups this season. As a freshman, Brown recorded 54 tackles and seven sacks for head coach Gene Murphy and the Eagles.
OL | Christopher Cooper (6-3 | 315) - Dothan, Alabama/Iowa Central CCCooper played in eight games for head coach Kevin Twait and offensive line coach Duane Twait at Iowa Central this season. The powerful lineman finished the year among the team's leaders in blocking percentage.
DB | De'Monterius Kendrick (6-0 | 185) - Crystal Springs, Mississippi/Holmes CCKendrick played in nine games for the Bulldogs, recording 10 tackles and a tackle-for-loss. The rarely tested defensive back recorded a season-high three tackles against Mississippi Delta Community College.
RB | Diquan Davis (5-11 | 180) - Greenville, Mississippi/Copiah-Lincoln CCDavis played in 11 games this season for head coach Glenn Davis and the Wolves. The speedster rushed 67 times for 339 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. As a freshman, Davis rushed 23 times for 143 yards, while playing in nine games. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry during his first year of collegiate competition.
WR | K'Shun Evans (6-4 | 195) - Raleigh, Mississippi/Coahoma CCEvans led Coahoma with 34 receptions for 458 yards and five touchdowns this season, averaging 65.8 yards per game. The tall receiver hauled in 4.9 receptions per game and averaged 13.5 yards per catch. As a freshman in 2013, Evans caught 10 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
DB | Tra'vez Taylor (6-0 | 178) - Summit, Mississippi/Southwest Miss. CCTaylor played in five games this season after battling injuries for SWCC. The cover corner totaled 10 tackles, including a season-high eight versus National Junior College Athletic Association National Champion East Mississippi Community College. Taylor spent his freshman season at Louisiana Tech University.
LB | Benny McCall (6-2 | 225) - Walls, Mississippi/Itawamba CCMcCall played in nine games for head coach Sean Cannon and ICC this past year, recording 41 tackles at his linebacker position. McCall recorded a season-high 10 tackles and a tackle-for-loss in the season finale versus Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. As a freshman, McCall played linebacker for undefeated East Mississippi Community College (12-0), where he recorded nine tackles in 11 games for the Lions.
OL | Dequin Andrews (6-4 | 285) - Farmerville, Louisiana/Coahoma CCAndrews played one season at Copiah-Lincoln CC and one season at Coahoma CC before signing with the Statesmen. The 6-foot-4 lineman is a product of Farmerville High School, where he played for Joe Spatfoa. Andrews also lettered in powerlifting while at FHS.
DL | Philanteus Jarrett (6-4 | 285) - Hollandale, Mississippi/Southeastern LouisianaJarrett played two seasons for coach Glenn Davis at Copiah-Lincoln CC before signing with Southeastern Louisiana University, where he helped the Lions to the 2013 Southland Conference title as a redshirt. The former Hollandale-Simmons product was an All-District and All-State selection in high school.
DB | De'Quan Reddick (6-0 | 205) - Palmetto, Florida/New Mexico Military One of the top junior college safeties in the country a year ago, Reddick helped lead New Mexico Military to a victory in the El Torro Bowl while leading the Broncos in tackles. A two-year starter for coach Joe Fortchner at NMMI, Reddick tallied over 100 tackles in his time in Roswell, N.M. Prior to playing at NMMI, Reddick was a standout for Palmetto High School and coach Dave Marino. Reddick was named PHS Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-District performer.
The Statesmen captured a share of their seventh Gulf South Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs after finishing the year 9-2 overall and 6-1 in GSC play. DSU will begin spring practice in late March with the annual Green & White Game set for mid-April. A complete schedule will be available in January.
