CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Taylor Beverly recorded a double-double scoring 22 points with 17 rebounds and was a key part of a late second half run that lifted the University of West Georgia (6-1, 1-0 GSC) to a 60-49 win over Delta State University (2-3, 0-1 GSC) Thursday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The game was a seesaw affair throughout the night that featured six ties and 20 lead changes, including three ties and eight lead changes in the second half.
Chelsey Rhodes, who led DSU with 19 points, made two free throws to give the Lady Statesmen a 45-44 lead with 4:39 to go in the second half.
Beverly and Marion Lemonnier combined for seven points apiece to key a 14-2 run over the final 4:25 of the contest as West Georgia turned the deficit into a 58-45 lead with 50 seconds left in the contest.
The Lady Statesmen had a tough second half, shooting 30 percent (6-of-20) from the floor and did not connect from beyond the 3-point arc in four attempts. DSU finished the night shooting 32 percent and 30 percent on 3-pointers overall.
Seneca Walton gave the Lady Statesmen a quick 2-0 lead connecting on a mid-range jump shot 45 seconds into the contest. Walton became the 34
th Lady Statesmen to score 1,000-career points with the basket and now has 1,004 career-points.
The Lady Statesmen held a 15-12 lead following a
Chelsey Rhodes 3-pointer before West Georgia responded with 7-0 to build a 19-15 lead on a Taylor Beverly Basket with 9:16 to go in the first half.
Anissa Jackson, who had eight first-half points, scored six-points while the Delta State defense caused nine turnovers during an 11-2 run that gave DSU a 26-21 lead at the 3:17 mark.
However, West Georgia's Katrina Littlepage's 3-pointer with seven seconds left capped a 9-3 run to close the half and give the Wolves' a 30-29 halftime edge.
The Wolves made 12-of-23 shots for 52 percent and went 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, while the Lady Statesmen went 10-for-30 for 33 percent but connected on 3-of-6 3-pointers in the opening half.
Anissa Jackson was the only other Lady Statesmen in double figures with 14 points, followed by
Rhandi Ball with five points.
Mary Carol Davis led DSU with four rebounds.
Lemonnier finished with 11 points followed by Nicole Fasick with 10 points for West Georgia.
Delta State welcomes GSC foe the University of West Alabama to Walter Sillers Coliseum Saturday at 2 p.m.
