Lady Statesmen Rally Comes Up Short Against Mississippi College

  • Short Story: Mississippi College held off a late rally by the Delta State University Women's Basketball team to claim a 74-69 Gulf South Conference win Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.  Chelsey Rhodes had a game-high 19 points to lead three Lady Statesmen in double figures while Seneca Walton collected a game-high eight rebounds.

How It Happened
  • Delta State held a 37-34 lead at halftime behind Chelsey Rhodes' 14 and Seneca Walton's 10 first-half points. The Lady Statesmen shot 60.9 percent (14-23) in the half while the Choctaws shot 53 percent (14-26). DSU went two-for-five from 3-point range (40 percent) and seven-of-10 (70 percent) from the free throw line.
  • MC went 14-of-26 from the floor (53.8 percent) and four-of-eight (50 percent) from 3-point field range in the opening half.
  • The Lady Statesmen never trailed in the first half taking a 20-10 following an Anissa Jackson jumper with 9:16 left. 
  • Mississippi College cut the DSU lead to 35-34 on two free throws by Kristen Sampson with seven seconds to go before halftime but a Seneca Walton layup with three seconds left gave DSU a three-point halftime advantage.
  • Mississippi College gained its first lead of the afternoon on a Jaianah Matthew 3-pointer at the 11:51 mark of the second half. The basket started a 7-2 run for the Choctaws that resulted in a 57-51 with 8:21 to go that was cut to 59-58 on a Walton three-point play with 3:59 remaining.
  • Trailing 69-61, the Lady Statesmen rallied to within 72-69 with 22 seconds left and an offensive chance to tie the game but a turnover and two Ashley Minor free throws sealed the 74-69 win with seven seconds left.
  • The Choctaws shot 81 percent (13-of-16) from the floor and made four-of-five 3-pointers (80 percent) in the second half.  MC finished 27-of-42 (64.3 percent) from the field on the afternoon.
  • Delta State shot 42.9 percent in the second half and connected on two-of-five 3-point field goals (40 percent) while shooting 51 percent overall.
  • Chelsey Rhodes scored a game-high 19 points followed by Walton with 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Rhandi Ball added 12 points five assists and Anissa Jackson grabbed six boards.
  • Ashley Minor and Jaianah Matthew scored 13 points apiece and Allie Hill added 10 to lead the Choctaws' scoring while Ann Marie Harris had a team-high five rebounds.
     
Beyond the Box Score
  • The loss snapped a four-game GSC winning streak and a six-game series winning streak for the Lady Statesmen.
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools since February 24, 1996 when DSU claimed a 76-65 win at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton.  The Choctaws win ended a five-game winning streak for DSU at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
  • Walton's 14 points moved her to 30th on the all-time scoring list with 1,079 career points, passing past Shawanna Wright (1,077) 1997-2000). The Clarksdale, Mississippi, native collected eight rebounds and now has 738 career boards, six away from moving into 13th.
  • Chelsey Rhodes' 19 points makes her 40 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club while, Rhandi Ball's 12 points is 50 points away from the 1,000-point mark.
  • Rhandi Ball was credited with two steals to move her to 205 career-steals, five away from 10th on DSU steals list.
  • This is the 49th season of Lady Statesmen Basketball with an all-time record of 1,073-269-3.
  • One of the nation's most successful women's programs, Delta State has made 26 NCAA postseason appearances with 55 tournament victories, 13 Elite Eight appearances, nine Final Four berths, and six NCAA/AIAW National Championships. The Lady Statesmen's 55 NCAA Tournament victories are also a Division II record.
