TIPOFF
Delta State University men's basketball extended its win streak to four games last week with wins over Shorter and Mississippi College. The Statesmen now hold an 11-6 record overall and an 8-3 record in the Gulf South Conference.

This week marks the start of the second half of conference play. DSU tipped off conference play against West Georgia and West Alabama at home in December.

Earlier this season, Delta State lost to West Georgia, 87-84. Senior Alister Chisholm led all scorers with a career-high 26 points. UWG's Marcus Dortch led the Wolves with 19 points.

DSU bounced back to defeat the Tigers of West Alabama, 73-66. Devin Schmidt led the Statesmen with 19 points, while UWA's Justin Wright scored 25.

Sevierville, Tennessee native Schmidt was named this week's GSC Player of the Week. The sophomore surpassed 800-career points against Mississippi College. He now has twelve 15-plus point games and eight 20-plus point games.

Freshman PJ Davis continues to provide valuable playing time off the bench. The forward was named the GSC Freshman of the Week for his performances against Shorter and Mississippi College. Davis recorded his third double-double of the season against the Hawks and has scored in double figures in two consecutive games.

The Cleveland, Mississippi product racked up a career-high seven blocks against Mississippi College. He now has 33 of the team's total 68 blocks to rank 25th in NCAA Division II.

LaQuavius Cotton has put up double-figures in five of the last six games and tied his career-high 19 points against the Choctaws of Mississippi College, his former team.

Delta State will tipoff the two-game road swing in Livingston, Alabama against West Alabama. DSU is 12-17 at Pruitt Hall and has not won a game there since Dec. 2, 2010. The Statesmen will then travel to Carrollton, Georgia to face off with West Georgia, who has the conference's leading scorer, Deonta Stocks (20.3 ppg).

The race for the top spot in the league is a close one with Delta State and Alabama-Huntsville tied for the No. 1 rank.

As a team, the Statesmen lead the conference in blocks (4.0 bpg), free-throw percentage (78.4%), and 3-point field goal percentage (42.2%). They are second in field goal percentage (50.4%) and third in field goal percentage defense (43.3%). Delta State's free-throw percentage is enough for the No. 4 spot in NCAA Division II with its 3-point percentage holding the No. 9 rank.

Before the contest with DSU, the Choctaws were holding their opponents to a 48.0 field goal percentage. The Statesmen demolished that by shooting 61.9 percent, the highest percentage Mississippi College has given up all year.
