Men's Basketball Drops One to West Georgia; Schmidt Ties Career-high 35 points

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Delta State University Statesmen lost their second straight conference game on the road against West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum. Devin Schmidt tied his career-high 35 points in the loss.

How It Happened
  • Scoring was dispersed among seven Statesmen in the first half.
  • The contest was tight from the start, featuring three ties and eight lead changes in the first 20 minutes of play.
  • West Georgia owned the largest lead in the half at eight, 20-12, at the 12:36 mark, but it did not last long as the Statesmen gained ground.
  • DSU capitalized on a 6:40 scoring draught by the Wolves.
  • With Delta State owning the 36-34 advantage in the final minutes, UWG's Alex Abreu knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to gain the 37-36 lead at the break.
  • Second-half action opened with each squad trading baskets until freshman PJ Davis sparked a 13-2 run, highlighted by jumpers from Schmidt and a 3-pointer from Jack Madgen. The Statesmen led by as many as 10, 56-46.
  • West Georgia responded with nine unanswered points to cut the lead to three, 57-54, with 10:24 to go.
  • Two more ties and six lead changes occurred over a five-minute span before UWG took the lead on a 3-pointer, 72-69.
  • The Green-and-White inched within one but never could gain momentum to pull ahead. Delta State fell to West Georgia, 90-85, in its second straight loss.
  • Although the Statesmen outshot the Wolves from the field and from beyond the arc, UWG took advantage of DSU's miscues by scoring 21 points off of 15 Delta State turnovers.
  • As a team, the Statesmen went 29-of-55 from the field (52.7 percent), 9-of-21 from downtown (42.9 percent), and 18-of-24 from the line (75.0 percent).
  • Schmidt led the Green-and-White in double-figures, tying his career-high 35 points. The sophomore went 13-for-22 from the field, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Madgen followed with 11 points.  
  • Davis led the defensive battle, tying his career-high 12 rebounds.
     
Beyond the Numbers
  • The Statesmen fell to the Wolves, 87-84, in their last matchup at Walter Sillers Coliseum earlier this season on Dec. 4.
  • Delta State is one game out of first place in the Gulf South Conference after losing two straight to West Alabama and West Georgia.
  • Devin Schmidt's 35-point performance ties his career-high previously established last season at home against West Alabama. Twenty of his total points came in the first half.
  • PJ Davis also tied his career-high in rebounds, recording 12 boards.
