Statesmen Fall to No. 15 Lee in Eight Goal Thriller


CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 15 Lee University scored three first half goals and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Delta State University men's soccer team, in a Gulf South Conference contest, on Friday at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • GSC scoring leader David Perez scored the first of his three first half goals just two minutes in, when he capitalized on a failed clearance.
  • Perez tallied his second of the half in the 15th minute on a shot from the top of the box.
  • Austin Jackman scored his team-best fourth goal of the season when Flames goalkeeper Tom Halsall failed to catch a cross from Nicolas Garrido. Jackman's sliding effort went just inside the post.
  • Perez extended the lead to 3-1 just 4:45 later off an assist from Jose Orellana.
  • The Statesmen were outshot 9-4 in the first half.
  • Lee added to its lead in the 50th minute when Matt Brady finished a cross from Arturo Rocha.
  • The Flames scored their final goal of the contest in the 53rd minute when Jake Malony took advantage of a quick restart, after a stoppage in play, and scored from 20 yards out.
  • Garrido scored his third of the season in the 61st minute when his long-range shot, off an assist from Ryan Pickup, slid past Halsall.
  • DSU closed the scoring in the 66th minute when Jaxon Lambert's shot deflected off the Halsall and into the net. Daniel Deblaere picked up his fifth assist of the season on the goal.
  • The Flames outshot DSU 21-10, including a 15-6 shots on goal advantage.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • David Perez scored three goals in the first half for the visitors.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Lee had not allowed more than one goal versus a GSC opponent. It also marked the first time in five games that the Flames had allowed more than one score.
