TIPOFFDelta State closed out its exhibition slate with a 74-40 loss to the University of Arkansas. DSU defeated its other exhibition opponent, Bethel University, 66-54, on Nov. 3.
Devin Schmidt averaged 19 points in the two preseason tune-ups.
The Statesmen travel to Livingston, Alabama, this week for a two-day classic tournament, the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Showdown.
Delta State faces off with Eckerd College on Friday, Nov. 13 at 12 p.m. to kick start the tournament. DSU and Eckerd have met three times in the past, as Delta Stte holds the 3-0 series record and a 2-0 record against the Tritons at the GSC/SSC Showdown. Last season, DSU picked up an 89-77 win.
Florida Southern College, the defending Division II National Champions, will face the Green-and-White on the second and final day of the tournament, Saturday, Nov. 14 at 12 p.m. The Mocs earned the 97-80 victory in last season's meeting.
Junior guard Schmidt and senior
Jack Madgen are within striking distance of some significant milestones. Schmidt, a 6-foot-4 guard, is only 108 points away from breaking into the top 10 all-time scoring list at Delta State, while Madgen needs 133 points away from the 1,000 point club.
The Green-and-White will face off with four more non-conference games before entering into a grueling league schedule. Up next, DSU travels to Stephenville, Texas, on Wednesday, Nov. 18 to take on Tarleton State, a 2014-15 Final Four squad. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
