TIP-OFF
Delta State University men's team is coming off its first loss of the season to No. 2 Tarleton State, a hard-fought battle that saw DSU lose 80-71.
Devin Schmidt was the driving force behind a furious second-half rally. Schmidt scored six points in the first half before finishing the night with a game-high 31 points, cutting an 18-point deficit to nine.
Terry Morris, a junior transfer from Copiah-Lincoln CC, produced a career-high 14 points against the Texans, connecting on 5-for-14 from the floor, 2-of-5 from three-point land and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.
Head Coach
Jim Boone is eight wins away from topping 400 wins at the Division II level and 16 away from eclipsing the 500-career wins mark. The Winfield, W.V., native boasts a .658 winning percentage (392-204) in DII.
Schmidt, a 6-foot-4 guard, continues to climb through the Delta State record book. He passed Mark Easley (1982-85) in his 31-point performance against Tarleton to hold the No. 11 spot on the all-time scorers list with 1,194 career points. Schmidt needs 25 points to break into the top 10 and 605 from tying the all-time leader Carl Brown (1983-86).
Jack Madgen is also in close proximity to a career milestone: the 1,000-point club. The junior Williamstown, Australia, native has scored 904 career points in three years and three games. Madgen is two three-pointers away from ranking third in the threes made (144) and threes attempted (348) categories.
The Statesmen are 2-1 in home openers under Coach Boone. After its home opener against Johnson, Delta State travels to Memphis, Tennessee for a rematch with LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. DSU lost to the Magicians last season at home 87-85 in double overtime.
