Rhodes’ Career-High Leads Lady Statesmen Past Harding, 59-51

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Chelsey Rhodes scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Delta State women's basketball team (2-0) to a 59-51 win over Harding University (2-2) on Friday night at Lloyd Clark Court-Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Delta State grabbed an early 6-1 lead in the opening quarter on a Becca Ruckes jumper with 7:18 remaining.
  • Harding tied the game 8-8 on a Falan Miller basket with 3:56 to go and again at 11-11 on a Correy Moyer 3-pointer at the 2:42 mark.
  • Aspriona Gilbert's layup gave the Lady Statesmen a 16-12 advantage with 27 seconds left before a Sydney Layrock free throw cut the lead to 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Harding grabbed its first lead, 18-16, with 7:51 left in the second quarter but endured scoring droughts of 5:11 after taking the lead and then closed the half on a 3:43 scoring drought.
  • Delta State went on a 10-0 run to build a 28-18 lead that saw Rhodes score six of the 10 points and Alexis Ross drain a 3-pointer at the 4:34 mark.
  • Chelsea Heidebrecht's 3-pointer ended the scoring drought and cut the deficit to 28-21 only to see a Rhodes 3-pointer give the Lady Statesmen a 33-21 halftime lead.
  • The Bison started the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut DSU's lead to 33-28.
  • A Gilbert layup ended a 3:58 scoring drought for the Lady Statesmen and gave DSU a 38-31 lead only to see a 4-0 spurt by Harding, cutting the lead down to 39-36.
  • Anissa Jackson's basket ended the third quarter scoring with DSU holding a 41-36 lead.
  • Harding never got any closer than five points in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Statesmen went on to win 59-51.

  • Rhodes' career-high 34 points, 18 in the first half, propelled her into 26th on the Delta State scoring list with 1,247 points. Rhodes also collected a career-high eight rebounds.
  • Senior Becca Ruckes added a season-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
  • Rhodes made three 3-pointers to move into third in career 3-pointers made with 153.
  • Delta State improved to 38-0-1 in home openers and 2-0 under second-year Head Coach Craig Roden.
  • The win marked career win number 517 for Roden.
