Statesmen Top Bethel 66-54

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State University's men's basketball team held off Bethel University 66-54 in an exhibition contest on Tuesday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Both teams were slow out of the gate on offense, but Delta State took a 10-2 lead with an 8-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer from senior Zelvin Smith Jr.
  • The Wildcats came within three points before a pair of threes from Devin Schmidt and Terry Morris made the score 22-11 at the 6:41 mark.
  • Bethel cut the DSU lead to seven, 29-22, as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.
  • Delta State earned its biggest lead of the night to open the second half at the 14:27 mark with a PJ Davis layup, notching the score at 41-24.
  • The Wildcats began to slowly chip away at the lead but never got closer than eight points.
  • Schmidt used two consecutive three-pointers in as many trips down the court to make the score 57-43 with 3:01 to go in the contest.
  • The Green-and-White held on to the advantage through to the final buzzer, taking the victory 66-54.
  • A junior guard out of Sevierville, Tennessee, Schmidt led all scorers with 22 points, while Davis added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore forward also contributed five blocks.

  • DSU returners, Schmidt, Madgen, Davis, Smith and Harrick, combined for 53 out of the total 66 points in their first exhibition of the season.
  • The other 13 points came from transfers Terry Morris (10) and James Kilpatrick (3).
  • Bethel earned the advantage in rebounds 44-37, while Delta State held the edge in turnovers with 19 to BU's 20.

  • DSU used seven baskets from downtown (7-of-17) to Bethel's 2-for-16 to create the margin of victory.
