Lady Statesmen Earn GSC Tournament Spot With Win Over UAH

CLEVELAND, Miss. - Chelsey Rhodes scored 23 points to lead three Delta State University players in double figures and help the Lady Statesmen claim a 59-45 win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday at Lloyd Clark Court-Walter Sillers Coliseum.  Seneca Walton added 14 points and Rhandi Ball chipped in 11 points and seven steals to pace the Lady Statesmen.

How It Happened
  • Trailing 5-4 at the 17:27 mark of the first half, Delta State went on a 12-3 run to take a 16-8 lead on a Carly Keller 3-point basket.
  • A Seneca Walton jump shot gave the Lady Statesmen a 28-16 lead with 7:08 remaining. 
  • The Lady Statesmen held the Chargers to just two points over the final 5:38 of the first half to take a 30-19 halftime lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen made 12-of-24 field goals (50 percent) while UAH was 7-of-19 from the field (36.8 percent) in the first half.
  • Delta State kept the lead between seven and 10 points before UAH cut the deficit to 43-39 on a Chandler Elder 3-point play with 10:56 left in the game.
  • DSU struggled offensively over the final 8:34 of the game, making two field goals while going 7-of-12 from the line.
  • The Lady Statesmen defense buckled down to hold the Chargers to one field goal over the final 4:20, while Chelsey Rhodes went five-of-six from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to yield the 59-45 win.  
  • Chelsey Rhodes had 23 points and four assists to lead four Lady Statesmen in double figures. Seneca Walton added 14 points and Rhandi Ball had 11. Anissa Jackson had a team-high six rebounds.
  • Juanice Newton led UAH with 12 points, while Newton, Josi Saunders, and Chandler Elder had four rebounds apiece.

Beyond the Numbers
  • The win was the sixth in seven games and fifth straight home win for the Lady Statesmen.
  • The win also secured the Lady Statesmen a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament that begins March 3 at campus sites.
  • Road to 1,000 Points: Senior forward Rhandi Ball's scored 11 points to move her career-points total to 1,017, passing Moe Bell (2007-2011) for 34thon the all-time scoring list. Senior forward Seneca Walton  scored 14 points and has 1,191career points, five shy of passing Amber Gean (1,195) 26th. Junior shooting guard Chelsey Rhodes  led DSU with 23 points and is now 31st on the all-time scoring list with 1,092, moving past Shawanna Wright (1,077).
  • Rhodes, who had 30 points in the first game in Cleveland, Mississippi (1.18.14), scored 26 points to take over 32nd on the all-time scoring list passing  Lynn Rose (1,051/1994-96)
  • Rhandi Ball's seven steals gives her 223 career steals, tying JoLynn Davis with 223 career steals.
  • Chelsey Rhodes has scored in double figures in 10 of her last 12 games and 18-of-22 games this season
  • The win was Head Coach Craigh Roden's 510th career win and his 312th Gulf South Conference victory.
