Statesmen Hit the Road for Final Road Trip of the Regular Season; Shorter/Lee on Tap

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Statesmen basketball of Delta State University are on a three-game win streak as they head into their last regular season road trip. DSU will travel to Rome, Ga. to take on the Shorter Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 8:00 p.m. and Cleveland, Tenn. to face the Lee University Flames on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 p.m. All tipoff times are Eastern time.

TIPOFF
Statesmen basketball at Delta State (14-11, 11-8 GSC) will make the two-game road swing to Rome, Ga. on Thursday, Feb. 19 to play the Shorter Hawks (16-9, 11-8 GSC). DSU will wrap up the road trip in Cleveland, Tenn. on Saturday, Feb. 21 to take on the Flames of Lee University (12-12, 7-12 GSC).

In the first meeting with Shorter on Jan. 12 at Walter Sillers, Delta State picked up the 79-74 win. Led by sophomore Devin Schmidt's 27 points, four Statesmen tallied double figures. Shorter's Dedric Ware led all scorers with 29 points.

DSU posted a 64-61 victory over the Lee Flames at Sillers on Jan. 10. Senior Alister Chisholm led the Statesmen with 20 points, while Stedmon Ford led LU with 26 points.

The matchup Thursday will feature the league's second and third leading scorers in Devin Schmidt (20.7 ppg) and Dedric Ware (18.8 ppg).

Shorter's Jordan Jacks ranks second in the GSC in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and field goal percentage (57.1%), while Ware leads the conference in assists (6.3 apg).

Delta State leads the league in three-point field-goal percentage (42.6%), free-throw percentage (76.3%), and rebounding defense (31.5 rpg).

Shorter and DSU hold the first and second spots in the conference in field-goal percentage. SU is shooting 49.6 percent from the field on the season, with Delta State close behind shooting 49.3 percent.

The Hawks also rank second in the league and 13th in NCAA Division II in scoring offense at 85.6 points per game.

As a team, the Statesmen are fourth in the NCAA in 3-point field-goal percentage at 42.6 percent, and 16th in free-throw percentage at 76.3 percent. Senior LaQuavius Cotton leads the team from the line going 79-of-95 for an 83.2 percent.

Sophomore guard Schmidt surpassed 1,000-career points last week against North Alabama. He currently holds the No. 13 spot on the all-time scoring list. The Sevierville, Tenn. native also ranks 11th on the all-time assists list with 243-career assist.

Schmidt was named the GSC Player of the Week for his performance last week that featured the 6-foot-4 guard scoring 64 points in two games. In the last 11 games, he is averaging 26.0 points per game.

With the 86-76 win over Alabama-Huntsville last week, the Statesmen secured a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. With three regular season games left, DSU still has the possibility of drawing a top-four seed and hosting a first round game.

Up next for DSU, is the final regular season game before postseason action. The Statesmen will host Mississippi College on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Day. The men's basketball team will honor two seniors, LaQuavius Cotton and Alister Chisholm.
