UWF Upends Lady Statesmen In Overtime, 65-62

  • Series: The Lady Statesmen lead the series 13-7 and are 3-4 at the UWF Fieldhouse after tonight. UWF won 73-69 in overtime on Saturday, Dec. 20 in Cleveland, Mississippi, and has won three straight in the series.
  • Short Story: Delta State University women's basketball team's bid to move into second place in the Gulf South Conference race came up short falling to the University of West Florida, 65-62, in overtime Thursday at the UWF Fieldhouse. The Argonauts overcame a nine-point second half deficit, forcing overtime on two Courtney Meyer free throws with 1.6 seconds left in regulation.  Chelsey Rhodes' layup with one second left cut the UWF lead to 63-62 before Jasime Wigfall made two free throws with one second left to seal the win. Rhandi Ball scored 17 points and had four steals to lead three Lady Statesmen in double figures.

How It Happened
  • Delta State held and early 9-5 lead after an Anissa Jackson jump shot with 12:35 left in the first half before UWF went on a 7-0 run to claim a 12-9 lead on a Kyla Muhammad layup with 6:57 to go.
  • A Carly Keller layup and back-to-back baskets by Rhandi Ball pushed the Lady Statesmen to a 15-12 lead with 5:37 left.
  • Seneca Walton's layup at the 2:11 mark capped a 10-2 run and gave DSU a 25-16 lead on its way to a 27-20 halftime lead.
  • Delta State claimed a 39-30 lead on an 8-2 run before the Argonauts fought back to take a 45-44 lead on a pair of 3-point plays with 5:31 remaining.
  • A Chelsey Rhodes layup gave the Lady Statesmen ahead 51-49 with 12 seconds left in regulation but Courtney Meyer made two free throws with 1.6 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
  • The Argonauts the early lead and eventually held a 59-54 lead after a Brianna Williams layup with 1:54 left in the extra session.
  • Anissa Jackson cut the UWF lead to 62-60 with nine seconds left and a Chelsey Rhodes got DSU to within one, 62-63 with one second left.
  • West Florida made 4-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off the Lady Statesmen in overtime. Jasmine Wigfall's two free throws gave UWF its final margin of victory, 65-62.
  • Three Lady Statesmen scored in double digits with Rhandi Ball leading the way with 17 points along with four steals and five rebounds. Seneca Walton had 16 points, six rebounds and three steals while Anissa Jackson added 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Jasmine Wigfall's 15 points led UWF followed by Courtney Meyer with 13 points and Alyssa Dupree-Moore with 10 points. Brianna Williams had eight rebounds and nine points.

Beyond the Numbers
  • The loss snapped a two-game road and a four-game overall winning streak for the Lady Statesmen.
  • Road to 1,000 Points: Senior forward Seneca Walton (1,177) and junior shooting guard Chelsey Rhodes (1,043) have already joined the 1,000-Point Club this season. Senior small forward Rhandi Ball scored 17 points against UWF and needs one point to join the club -- 999 points.
  • Rhandi Ball's four steals gives her 214 career steals, moving her into a tie for ninth with Deborah Temple (1982-84) on the all-time steals list.
  • Senior forward and All-America candidate Seneca Walton is currently second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg.), but leads the team in rebounding (7.2 rbg). The Clarksdale, Miss., has scored in double digits in 10 straight games after her 16 point outing against UWF.
