Seniors Light Up Charger Chillout in Day One

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Delta State University softball extended its win streak to four wins with victories over Maryville and Montevallo in the first day of the UAH Charger Chillout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One – Maryville University
  • The Saints of Maryville University struck first on an RBI single in the third to lead 1-0.
  • Delta State tied the game and took the lead, 2-1, in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle from senior Taylor Holland to score Andrea Cutts. Holland later came around to score on an RBI double to left center from Brook Cline.
  • The Lady Statesmen tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of RBI singles from Amber Adcock and Cline. Kaitlin Moore reached on an error by the second baseman, scoring Kassidy Tally to extend the lead to 5-1.
  • Maryville added one more run in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2. The Saints went down in order in the seventh for DSU to claim its third straight victory, 5-2.
  • The seniors led the offensive attack with Adcock, Holland, and Cline each going 2-for-3. Cline drove in two runs, while Adcock and Holland added one RBI apiece.
  • Sophomore Taylor Tucker (1-0) went seven strong innings for the complete game in her first appearance of the season, giving up two earned runs on six hits.
     
Game Two – University of Montevallo
  • Delta State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Moore and Kory Watterson doubled to score Tally and Adcock with Watterson's double scoring Moore. Holland singled, enabling Watterson to score on a throwing error by Montevallo.
  • Watterson doubled and Holland singled again to bring in two more runs in the bottom of the third to build on their lead, 6-0.
  • The Falcons scored two runs in the fourth to get back in the ball game on DSU fielding errors, but the Lady Statesmen quickly answered in the bottom frame.
  • Holland drove in two more runs on a ground-rule double that nearly cleared the fence, bringing in Watterson and Moore.
  • Delta State went into the fifth inning with the 10-2 edge. Three-up-three-down by UM clinched the run-rule victory for the Green-and-White, 10-2 in five innings.
  • Holland led the offensive attack, going a perfect 3-for-3 and driving in four runs. Tally, Moore, and Adcock each went 2-for-3, while Watterson went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
  • Taylor Johnson (2-0) continued her success in the circle by going five innings and giving up two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out three.
     
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In game one, Taylor Tucker tied her career-high six strikeouts en route to the victory.
  • Delta State extended its win streak to four games, the best start to a season Delta State softball has had since the 2010 season.
  • The senior class showed out in the first day of the Chillout. Cline, Holland, and Adcock combined to go 11-for-15 on the day and drove in eight of the total 15 runs scored by DSU.
  • Earlier this week, Taylor Johnson was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman and Pitcher of the Week for her performance against Henderson State.

The Lady Statesmen continue play at the Charger Chillout on Saturday, Feb. 7. Delta State will take on Ohio Dominican at 12:00 p.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
