  • Short Story:  The Delta State University men's basketball used a 10-0 run to erase a six-point second half deficit en route to a 80-69 win over Valdosta State University Saturday at The Complex in Valdosta, Georgia. The Statesmen forged to a 74-65 lead and made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:37 to hold off the Blazers. Devin Schmidt led four Statesmen in double figures with 22 points while P.J. Davis followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Zelvin Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds.  
How It Happened
  • Valdosta State held a 17-10 lead after a Josh Lemon basket with 12:08 left in the first half before Devin Scmidt later tied the game 17-17 at the 7:27 mark. 
  • Zelvin Smith gave DSU a 22-21 lead with 3:54 remaining, and Devin Schmidt made a jump shot with two seconds left to knot the game 30-30 at halftime. 
  • Jeremiah Hill made back-to-back 3-pointers to help Valdosta State take a 59-53 lead with 9:07 to go in the second half before the Statesmen went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good, 63-59, after an Alister Chisholm layup with 6:28 left. 
  • The Statesmen later used a 9-2 run to build a 74-65 lead after a P.J. Davis basket and a LaQuavious Cotton free throw.
  • Valdosta State cut the DSU lead to 74-59 but never climbed any closer as the Statesmen made 8-of-10 free throws over the final 1:37 to secure the win. 
  • The Statesmen had four players score in double figures. Devin Schmidt led with 22 points along with six assists and five rebounds. P.J. Davis followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Zelvin Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Alister Chisholm added 13 points and six rebounds. 
  • James Spencer had a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Blazers while Blake Justice had 15 points.
  • Delta State held a 36-32 edge in paint points and scored 18 second chance points.
  • The Statesmen shot 50.9 percent from the field (28-55), while Valdosta State connected on 41.3 percent of its shots (26-63).
Beyond the Numbers
  • The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Statesmen, finishing 1-1 on the two-game road trip.
  • Devin Schmidt continues his streak of eight straight games scoring 15-plus points, scoring 22 points versus Valdosta State. The sophomore guard now has nineteen 15-plus games this season.
  • Freshman PJ Davis recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards.
