THE BASICS:  Southern Arkansas scored two runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit and earn a 6-5 win over Delta State University on Wednesday at Ferris Field. Junior centerfielder Brandon Cummins went 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI leading the Statesmen at the plate.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  •  SAU scored runs in the first and second innings to build a 2-1 lead. Jon Phillips singled and scored on a Billy Germaine single in the first and William Townsend singled home Trevor Ward in the second.
  • The Statesmen cut the deficit to 2-1 on an Ethan Gill RBI single that scored Brandon Cummins.
  • SAU increased the lead to 4-2 on a Jon Phillips two-run double in the fifth.
  • Delta State claimed its first lead of the day, 5-4, with a four-run fifth. Junior Trent Gimbrone RBI single, followed by a Cummins two-run double tied the game, 4-4. Colton Welch's RBI single through the left side put the Statesmen ahead.
  • The Muleriders' Korey Keith's solo home run to open the seventh tied the game 5-5 and Carver Rademacher doubled home a run to give SAU a 6-5 advantage.
  • The Statesmen had the tying run at third in the eighth and ninth innings, including loading the bases in the ninth before ground outs ended both threats.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Statesmen used four pitchers versus the Muleriders. Drew Milligan (LHP), Witt Haggard (RHP), Vincent (LHP), Jonathan Moody (RHP),
  • Due to rain and snow over the first few weeks of the season, the Statesmen took the field for just the 10th time in 27 scheduled games.
  • The Statesmen left 10 men on base, six in scoring position. SAU left eight runners on base, four in scoring position.
  • Brandon Cummins went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three doubles. Trent Gimbrone, Ethan Gill and Colton Welch had RBI for the Statesmen. Cummins' three doubles fell one shy of tying the DSU record for two-baggers in a game.
  • Jace Powers (1-0) worked four inning with a strikeout while giving up three hits to earn the win for SAU.
  • Justin Vincent (1-1) suffered the loss for the Statesmen, giving up two runs, on three hits with four strikeouts.

  • The Statesmen host Union University for a Gulf South Conference series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday and concluding with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. each day.
