THE BASICS: HUNTVILLE, ALABAMA – Delta State scored two runs in the fifth inning and then held on for a 3-2 win over No. 6 Alabama Huntsville in the night cap of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Charger Park. Chandler Bock's bases loaded sac-fly to right field in the tenth inning helped the Chargers take a 4-3 win in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1: - Alabama-Huntsville grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. Chandler Burk doubled to open the frame and Chandler Brock drew a one out walk. Burk and Brock stole second and third, before Brandon Lawing drove in Burk with a single through the left side putting runners at the corners. Lawing got caught in a rundown allowing Brock to score from third and DSU tagged Lawing on the play for the final out of the inning.
- Ben Pickard double home Brandon Cummins and Ethan Gill's single to left plated Pickard to tie the game 2-2 in the third.
- Cummins made a sliding catch at the warning track on a Brock fly ball to centerfield that scored Tanner Cimo to give UAH a 3-2 lead moving to the fourth. The Statesmen limited UAH to just a run after the Chargers loaded the bases with no outs in the inning.
- Colton Welch singled to center and Jacob Swiney singled up the middle with one out in the eighth. Austin McClain, who pinch ran for Welch, moved to third on Swiney's single and scored on a Thibodeaux sac-fly to right field tied the game, 3-3.
- Cummins singled up the middle and moved into scoring position after stealing second in the ninth only to see a fly out end the inning.
- The Chargers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but Witt Haggard got a ground out to force extra innings.
- The Statesmen put runners at the corners with one out in the 10th before UAH's reliever Luke Mould induced an inning ending double play.
- A single and two walks loaded the bases for the Chargers in the 10th before Rhodes scored on Brock's sac-fly to centerfield to give UAH the 4-3 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2:- Ben Hall doubled with two outs and scored on a Trey Mathis single to give UAH 1-0 lead in the second.
- The Statesmen tied the game 1-1 in the third. Pickard delivered a one-out double and Gill followed with a single through the right side to score Pickard.
- Delta State took advantage of two UAH errors in the fifth. Pickard walked and moved to second after an error by the UAH shortstop that allowed Gill reach on a fielder's choice. A throwing error by the UAH third basemen on a Thibodeaux grounder scoring Gill and Pickard for a 3-1 DSU lead.
- Ryan Barnes hit a solo home run with two outs in the sixth to cut the Statesmen lead to 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:- GAME 1 Leaders: Cummins 2-for-4; Pickard 2-for-5, double and one RBI; Jacob Swiney 2-for- 5; Ethan Gill and Thibodeaux had RBI singles;
- Both starters in game one did not figure in the decision. DSU's Drew Milligan allowed three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings pitched but did not figure in the decision. UAH's Daniel Koger struck out 10 batters and gave up three runs on five hits in 7.1 innings. Koger, an Auburn University transfer, was 6-0 in six starts entering the day before his first no decision of the year.
- Luke Mould (3-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout to get the game one win for the Chargers. Nick Goza (1-4) allowed one run one a hit as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
- The Statesmen left 11 men on base, five in scoring position, while UAH stranded 13 on base.
- GAME 2 Leaders: Swiney Gill, Pickard and Barrett accounted to Statesmen four hits. Pickard scored two runs and Gill had the Statesmen lone RBI.
- DSU's Jonathan Moody (2-1) recorded a career high 10 strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits to earn the win in game two.
- Chris Kilpatrick (1-1) gave up two runs on no hits with a walk and four strikeouts to suffer the loss for UAH.
