THE BASICS: 
HUNTVILLE, Alabama – Jacob Swiney and Ethan Gill combined for seven RBI's to lead Delta State University (7-9, 6-5 GSC) to a 9-5 win over No. 6 Alabama-Huntsville (17-4-1, 11-4-1 GSC) on Sunday at Charger Park. Swiney went 5-for-5 with a home run and while Gill was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:                        
  • Brandon Cummins worked a leadoff walk and Jacob Swiney followed with a home run to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead in the first.  Ethan Gill doubled with one out but was stranded at third when a ground out closed the first inning.
  • The Statesmen added three runs in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Swiney opened the inning with a single and scored on a Gill RBI single and Landon Thibodeaux delivered a one-out, two-run double.
  • Erick Santiago singled with one out and advanced to second on a Brandon Cummins sac-bunt in the fourth. Santiago would score on a Swiney singled through the left-side to give to extend the DSU lead to 6-0.
  • Alabama-Huntsville put runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but did not score.   The Chargers loaded the bases in the third before Justin Vincent struck out Ryan Barnes and Brandon Lawing to end the frame. UAH placed runners at first and second with one out when the Statesmen turned a double play to end the fourth.
  • The Chargers loaded the bases in the fifth and managed to score two runs to cut the lead to 6-2. A Lawing sac-fly to center scored Cody Burton and a throwing error scored Chandler Brock on the play.
  • UAH scored a run on a ground out with the bases loaded followed by a two out balk to trail 6-4 heading into the seventh.
  • Swiney singled to lead off the seventh and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Gill lifted a sac-fly to right to score Swiney and give DSU a 7-4 lead.
  • Barnes drew one out walk in the eighth and scored on a Ben Rhodes RBI single to right to trail 7-5 heading into the ninth. Nick Goza came on in relief of Trevor Blocker and got a pop up and a fly out to get the Statesmen out of the inning.
  • The Statesmen added two insurance runs in the ninth when Gill blasted a two-out, two-run home run to left field to give the Statesmen a 9-5 lead going to the bottom half of the inning.
  • Nick Goza closed things out in the ninth striking out the final two UAH hitters to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • DSU Leaders: Swiney 5-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored; Gill 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored; Thibodeaux 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Santiago 2-for-4 with a run scored; Brandon Cummins and Colton Welch each had hits for DSU. Gill's home run in the ninth was his first home run as a Statesmen.
  • UAH Leaders: Trey Mathis 2-for-4; Ryan Barnes 2-for-4 with an RBI;  Ben Rhodes and Brandon Lawing each had RBI hits for UAH;  
  • DSU starter Justin Vincent worked 4.1 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts.  UAH starter Tyler Howell (2-1) gave up five runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout to take the loss.
  • Trevor Blocker (1-0) pitched one inning with three strikeouts while giving up one run on one hit with two walks to earn the win.
  • Nick Goza entered the game with one on and one out in the eighth. Goza worked 1.2 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to record his second save.

Delta State remains on the road to play Ouachita Baptist at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
