Statesmen Fall To Ouachita Baptist, 9-4

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State could not overcome a 7-1 deficit to Ouachita Baptist University falling to the Tigers 9-4 at Rab Rodgers Field on Wednesday. Reuben Miller and Jace Melby combined for three RBI's for the Tigers while Brandon Cummins, Ben Pickard and Jacob Swiney had RBIs for the Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brandon Cummins singled and after advancing to third on a failed pick off attempt, scored on a Jacob Swiney sac-fly to right.
  • Ouachita Baptist scored two in the first and second innings to take a 4-1.  Reuben Miller's –sac-fly tied the game and another run came in on a fielding error in the first.  Justin Weigle had an RBI double and another Miller sac-fly highlighted the second.
  • The Tigers' lead grew to 7-1 in the fourth. Jace Melby and Drew Feuerbacher had RBI singles and the third run scored on a Matt Sinclair sac-fly.
  • A three-run fifth cut the deficit to 7-4. Brandon Cummins tripled in a run and Ben Pickard had an RBI double to highlight the inning.
  • The Tigers added two insurance runs to take a 9-4 lead in the eighth on RBI singles from Miller and Sinclair.
  • OBU starter Jacob May (1-0) allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with a strikeout in 4.1 innings to earn the win.
  • Starter Conner Burton (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Statesmen, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits with three walks and strikeout.
  • Cummins went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored to lead the Statesmen at the plate.
  • Jace Melby was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Miller was 1-for-2 with three RBIs to lead OBU at the plate.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Statesmen left eight runners on base, four in scoring position. DSU loaded the bases in the fourth and sixth innings leaving four runners stranded in scoring position.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Delta State had a two-game winning streak snapped.
  • Pickard's double was his fifth of the season while Cummins triple was his second.
  • Burton's start on the mound for the Statesmen was the first start of his DSU career.
  • OBU was a member of the Gulf South Conference before leaving the league to form the Great American Conference in 2011.
  • Delta State Head Coach Mike Kinnison remains nine wins shy of reaching his 800th win heading into this weekend's series with the University of West Georgia.
