Giambrone drives in five to lead DSU to 31-7 win at MVSU

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team exploded for 26 hits and a season-high 31 runs to defeat Mississippi Valley State University, 31-7, on Wednesday, April 1 at Delta Devils Field. The Statesmen improved to 11-11 on the year, while the Delta Devils slid to 6-16-1. DSU's 31 runs were the most the Statesmen have scored since plating 24 in a 24-3 victory at Montevallo in 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State scored in every inning but the seventh, including a 10-run third.
  • The victory was the 80th in the series for the Statesmen. DSU now owns an 80-15 mark against MVSU.
  • The Statesmen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Colton Welch, scoring Brandon Cummins from third.
  • Delta State plated four runs in the second on back-to-back RBI hits by Brandon Cummins and Jacob Swiney, and a two-run home run by Ethan Gill, his fourth of the season.
  • Cummins kept the Statesmen rolling in the third, slapping a two-RBI triple down the right field line to extend the lead to 7-0. Josh Paden, who singled to open the inning, and Juan Rivera, who walked, scored on the play. DSU tacked on four more runs in the frame, as Cummins and Swiney scored on errors.  Back-to-back walks tacked on two runs, with Juan Rivera delivering two RBIs on a single and Swiney another run on an RBI double to make it 15-0.
  • Ethan Gill connected on a titanic home run to left to start the scoring in the fourth. Rivera and Cummins brought in runs on singles up the middle to make the margin 18-0 in favor of DSU.
  • With Gill at first, Colton Welch (4) smashed a two-run home run to straight away center to make it 20-0. The fifth closed on an RBI single by Paden to lead 21-0.
  • In the sixth, the Statesmen added three more runs on RBI hits from Gill, Welch and Thibodeaux.
  • MVSU finally scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs on RBI singles by Quentin McDonald, Kalik May and Xzavier Franklin. Arrington Smith also drove in a run on a sac-fly to right to cut the lead to 24-4.
  • Trent Giambrone made it a 27-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a three-run home run to left-center. DSU added a run on a wild pitch to make it 28-4 with an inning to go.
  • In the top of the ninth, Delta State added three runs to take a 31-5 lead. Giambrone delivered a two-RBI double to right-center to plate the first two runs. Luke Stanley drove in his first run of his career with an RBI single to center for the third.
  • Drew Wheeler brought home the Delta Devils fifth run of the game on an RBI single to left-center in the bottom of the eighth.
  • MVSU added two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the final 31-7.  
  • Cody Waddell (1-0) earned the victory for the Statesmen. The former Northwest Mississippi CC transfer worked 3.0 scoreless innings, walking one and striking out a career-high five.
  • Tanner Cable (2.0), Westin Stringer (1.0) and Turner Neely (3.0) all worked in relief for the Statesmen.
  • Blake Thomas (1-5) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. In all, MVSU used seven pitchers in the loss.  
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • 31 – The Statesmen scored a season-high 31 runs in the win at Mississippi Valley State. DSU's previous high was 14 versus Arkansas-Monticello on Feb. 11, 2015 in a 14-8 victory over the Boll Weevils. The 31 runs are also the most scored by the Statesmen since defeating the University of Montevallo 24-3 on Feb. 10, 2012 at Kermit Johnson Field.  
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Cody Waddell (RHP/Jr.) earned his first career start against the Delta Devils. The Vicksburg, Miss., native entered the contest 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA.
  • Redshirt junior DH Josh Paden made his first career start for the Statesmen. The Goleta, Calif., native has played in two games for Delta State this season, while hitting .500 with an RBI. Paden finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • With spring arriving, the Statesmen have homered in five straight games, including four today – tying a season-high four versus West Georgia on March 29, 2015 at Ferriss Field.
  • The Statesmen finished the game with a season-high 11 extra-base hits. DSU collected six doubles, a triple and four home runs.
  • Ethan Gill, Trent Giambrone, Landon Thibodeaux and Brandon Cummins all finished the day with three hits. Giambrone drove in a career-high five RBIs with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Gill went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.
  • Juan Rivera had a career-high three RBIs on two hits. Brandon Cummins also finished the night with three RBIs while scoring three runs.
  • Every Statesman with at least two at-bats in the contest collected a hit.   
 
UP NEXT
  • The Statesmen travel to Cleveland, Tenn., as Delta State faces Lee University in Gulf South Conference action. Friday's series opener is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Fred Sington and Keith Latham will have the call on the Statesmen Sports Network.
