Milligan and Moody pitch Statesmen to Sunday Sweep of the Hawks

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior pitchers Drew Milligan and Jonathan Moody pitched Delta State University baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Shorter University on Sunday, April 19 at Ferriss Field. Milligan (3-1) led the Statesmen (20-14, 14-8 GSC) to a 7-5 win in game one, while Moody (4-2) struckout a career-high 11 Hawks (14-20, 9-17 GSC) in a 6-0 complete game shutout. The victories pushed the Statesmen past Valdosta State into fifth place in the GSC standings with four league games remaining on the schedule.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
  • The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Zach Santos' RBI ground, plating Brian Cabrera.
  • Ian Redetzky's two-run home run to left-center in the second inning increased Shorter's lead to 3-0.
  • After back-to-back singles by George Ragsdale and Zach Santos, Dustin Lawson slapped a two-RBI single through the right side to put the Hawks ahead 5-0 on the Statesmen in the top of the third.
  • Delta State finally got to Shorter starter Travis McPherson in the bottom of the third, as Ethan Gill smashed a three-run home run, his seventh of the year, over the left field wall to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-3.
  • In the fifth, Jacob Swiney's towering two-run home run to left tied the game at 5-5. Ben Pickard followed with a double off the left field wall, forcing Shorter to pull McPherson and bring in Christian Champion from the bullpen.
  • The Statesmen took a 6-5 lead in the sixth on Swiney's RBI single to center, scoring Trent Giambrone.
  • DSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, as Landon Thibodeaux drove in Ethan Gill, who doubled to open the inning, for a 7-5 lead.
  • Drew Milligan and Witt Haggard made the lead hold up, as the duo combined for two scoreless innings.
  • Drew Milligan (3-1) picked up his third win of the year after throwing 7.1 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits. The Olive Branch, Miss., native walked three and struck out seven in the victory. After surrendering five runs in the first three innings, Milligan tossed 4.1 scoreless innings to keep the Statesmen in the contest.
  • Witt Haggard (1) earned his first save of the year, working 1.2 innings with a strikeout.
  • Christian Champion (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Hawks. The right-handed pitcher worked 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Travis McPherson started the contest and worked 4.0 innings as well, while giving up five runs on six hits.
  • Ethan Gill (2-for-4) and Jacob Swiney (4-for-4) combined for six RBIs in the victory.
  • Dustin Lawson went 4-for-5 to lead SU at the plate.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
  • Jacob Swiney's RBI double to left-center scored Brandon Cummins in the bottom of the first to put the Statesmen up 1-0 on the Hawks.
  • In the bottom of the second, senior designated hitter Marc McMillian cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to center, extending DSU's lead to 3-0. The double was the first of the season for the Mendenhall, Mississippi native.
  • Shorter threatened in the top of the fourth, as Taylor Cato was hit by a pitch and George Ragsdale singled to left. Statesman starter Jonathan Moody struck out Zach Santos, Dustin Lawson and Ian Redetzky in order to end the inning and qwell the threat.
  • Delta State plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Landon Thibodeaux singled to center before Marc McMillian slapped his second double of the night to right-center. Thibodeaux scored on the play. After a groundout by pinch-hitter Juan Rivera moved McMillian to third, a wild pitch to the backstop allowed the senior to score.
  • Redshirt freshman shortstop Dalton Skelton made the most of his one at-bat, slapping an RBI single through the right side, plating Landon Thibodeaux from second.
  • Jonathan Moody (4-2) made it a memorable Senior Day, collecting his fourth win of the year with a complete game shutout. The Millington, Tenn., native struck out a career-high 11 in the win, including the final out of the contest. He gave up five hits and did not walk a batter.
  • Colton Cross (2-4) earned the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Justin Machado gave up one run on three hits in his one inning.
  • Marc McMillian went 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBIs to lead the Statesmen. Trent Giambrone and Landon Thibodeaux finished with two hits apiece.
  • Dustin Lawson and George Ragsdale paced Shorter with two hits each.  
     

STAT OF THE GAME
  • GAME ONE: 4.1 – Drew Milligan threw 4.1 scoreless innings after surrendering five runs to the Hawks in the first three innings. The senior kept the Hawks at bay while the Statesmen offense clawed back for the 7-5 win.
  • GAME TWO: 2 – Senior designated hitter Marc McMillian went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in DSU's 6-0 win.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Delta State honored its 2015 senior class prior to Sunday's doubleheader. This year's seniors include: Jonathan Andrews, Jonathan Moody, Marc McMillian, Nick Goza, Juan Rivera, Landon Thibodeaux, Drew Milligan, Turner Neeley, Hunter Twitty, and Witt Haggard
  • Shorter put their leadoff-man on base in seven straight innings during game one.
  • Ethan Gill (7) and Jacob Swiney (3) connected on Delta State's 34th and 35th home runs of the year, tying the 2010 Statesmen for the highest total this decade
  • Delta State claimed its fourth victory of the year when trailing after four innings, improving to 4-12.
  • The Statesmen improved to 14-8 (.636) in the Gulf South Conference, moving into fifth place in the race for postseason play. Delta State has four league games remaining on the regular season schedule, including a three-game series at West Florida next weekend.
  • Jonathon Moody set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts. His previous high was 10 in a 3-2 win at Alabama-Huntsville.
