CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State (22-14, 15-8 GSC) closes out the regular season against the University of West Florida (28-16, 19-11 GSC) in Pensacola, Florida, starting with a doubleheder on on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Seeding for the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament heats up with the Statesmen sitting fourth in the GSC standings with a .652 winning percentage. West Georgia (28-13, 19-10 GSC) is in third place with a .655 percentage and the Argonauts are fifth with a .633 percentage. League leader West Alabama (33-9, 23-6 GSC) and second place Alabama-Huntsville (35-6-1, 21-6-1) hook up for a three-game series that will determine the top seed and host for next week's GSC Tournament on May 2-6. West Florida is hitting .293 with 68 doubles, eight triples, 14 home runs and are 66-of-121 in steals. The UWF Series: The Statesmen and Argonauts have played 53 times prior to this weekend's series with the Statesmen leading the series 29-24. Delta State is 10-12 at Jim Spooner Field, 13-5 at Ferriss Field and 6-7 in neutral site contests. West Florida holds a 5-4 lead in GSC Tournament games and a 3-1 lead in NCAA Region Tournaments. The first meeting between the two schools was in 1987 with West Florida earning a 7-6 win.
Last Time Out: Trailing 1-0 into the fourth, the Green and White exploded for 17 runs on the way to a 17-2 win over Henderson State on Tuesday. The Statesmen scored four in the fourth, six in the fifth and seven in the sixth before the Reddies answered with a run in the ninth. Brandon Cummins went 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs as the Statesmen pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon. Ethan Gill hit a two-run home run and Landon Thibodeaux and Juan Rivera had two RBIs apiece. Marc McMillian, Hunter Twitty, Ben Pickard and Jonathan Andrews also drove in a run. Jake Brumfield (3-0) gave up one run while limiting HSU to four hits with two strikeouts over five innings of work to earn the win.
Statesmen Streaks: The Statesmen have won five-straight entering the weekend after sweeping a three-game series from Shorter University and defeating Henderson State (4.21) on Tuesday. Landon Thibodeaux enters the weekend with an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 18 straight games.
Moody Earns Second GSC POTW: Senior Jonathan Moody was named the GSC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, April 21 for a second time this season. Moody turned in a career-best performance in a 6-0 win shutout of Shorter University at Ferriss Field on Sunday, April 19. The Millington, Tennessee, native climbed to 4-2 on the year with the win, while improving his walks-to-strikeout ratio to 54-14. The 5-foot-11 senior recorded his first shutout and fourth complete game of the season, striking out a career-high 11, with no walks, while scattering five hits over 7.0 innings. Moody's previous career-high for strikeouts was 10 against Alabama-Hunstville (3.21).
