DSU Drops Game One to West Florida; Game Two Suspended

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Delta State University softball dropped game one of the Gulf South Conference series with West Florida on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • West Florida got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Barnard tripled down the right field line. A DSU fielding error allowed Barnard to score for the Argos to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Delta State's lone run came in the top of the fifth, tying the game at 1-1. Kassidy Tally reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a Jessie Rodriguez single to left center field.
  • The Argos used a walk off single from Belser to take game one of the series, 2-1.
  • DSU only recorded four hits in the outing from Kaitlin Moore, Kory Watterson, Tally, and Rodriguez.
  • Freshman Shayna Beaver (10-6) suffered the loss in circle, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on eight hits.
  • West Florida doubled the hits of DSU, 8-4.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • The Lady Statesmen offense got off to a slow start, going three up, three down in the first three innings. Only one batter reached base through 4.1 innings.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Game two was suspended in the third inning due to inclement weather. Delta State had the 1-0 lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen have recorded 35 hits in the last six games.
  • Kassidy Tally now holds the third spot in the career runs scored column in the DSU record books. The Raleigh, Miss., native has crossed the plate 131 times in her tenure and looks to pass Brittany Tillery (2006-09) in second with 172.
 
UP NEXT
  • The second game of the doubleheader will be resumed Sunday, April 26 at 12 p.m. West Florida and Delta State played three complete innings before severe weather hit. DSU was leading 1-0 after scoring a run in the first inning.
