Late Run Lifts Lady Statesmen Past West Georgia, 60-49

CLEVELAND, Miss.  – Freshman Alondrea Rush scored a career-high 17 points to lead Delta State University (14-2, 11-2 GSC) to a 60-49 Gulf South Conference win over the University of West Georgia (3-16, 3-10 GSC) on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Delta State jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead behind two 3-pointers from Alondrea Rush and one from Chelsey Rhodes to hold a 15-11 lead at end of the first quarter.
  • The Wolves fought back to take a 23-22 lead on UWG's Katrina Littlepage's jump shot with 4:08 left in the second quarter.
  • Baskets by Becca Ruckes and Aspriona Gilbert combined with a 3:41 West Georgia scoring drought gave the Lady Statesmen a 26-23 halftime lead.
  • A Gilbert jumper on the end of a 5-0 run gave the Lady Statesmen a 36-27 advantage before the Wolves cut the lead to 36-33 on a JaDechia Hill 3-pointer at the 2:26 mark. 
  • Antoinette Riddle's basket with 32 seconds to go gave DSU a 38-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • West Georgia connected on a pair of 3-pointers by April Levy and D'Asia Cain to tie the game, 38-38, to start the final quarter.
  • Trailing 45-44, Delta State outscored the Wolves 14-2 over a span of 3:29 to build a 58-47 lead after two free throws by Rush with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen went on to win 60-49.

  • Delta State held its eighth opponent under 50 points this season.
  • Rush led the Lady Statesmen with a career-high 17 points that included a career-high five 3-pointers made.
  • Becca Ruckes recorded her first double-double and the team's second double-double this season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Rhodes scored 13 points to move into 12th on the all-time scoring list with 1,514 points. She passed Camelia Ward (1,505 points/1975-78). The Monticello, Ark., native went 3-of-8 from three-point land and has now made 178-of-536 3-pointers for her career, ranking second and third, respectively.
  • DSU is 9-0 at home this season and has won 15 straight home games, dating back to a 74-69 overtime loss to West Florida (12.20.14).
  • The Lady Statesmen captured their third straight win in the series with West Georgia and improved to 18-3 all-time at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
  • Craig Roden captured his 529th career win and his 330th GSC victory.
